Hey all, I'm turning 21 in a couple months and I'm trying to think of a relatively unique way to celebrate. I don't party or go to clubs, and I don't care at all to get drunk, nor do I really want to go to Vegas because it seems like that's what everyone does for their 21st birthday. So far the only idea I can think of is to go wine tasting, but I'm recruiting you all to help me think of other "sophisticated" ways to celebrate! Any ideas?? For those of you 21 and older, how did you celebrate??

Thanks.

Do what I do. Borrow a mathematics text book from the library and read it all in one night. Booze also helps. Do this and you'll have the most exciting birthday ever. ;)

For my birthday, a bunch of friends from work took me out drinking, then to a bondage club (not real hardcore, it was called "The Chamber", in Atlanta).

I hadn't really tried much in the way of alcohol, so it seemed reasonable to me to try various things to see what I'd like. Wound up staring at the dance floor and stage acts while my boss hit on my sister all night...

Go to the beach and build a fire or drive out to the dunes or something.. maybe go snowboarding with some friends... although the snow isn't very good right now, I hear.. I think they have the artificial snow machine going up at Big Bear.. which is usually kinda disappointing..

That pretty lousy, although I think I can beat it for "worst 21st birthday.." Humidity + malaria = no fun. :p

I'd guess malaria probably gives you the vicious trots to begin with, so I bet you went easy on the tequila...

For my 19th (legal drinking age here) I just went out with my roommates and got plastered.

What you could do (it's not sophisticated, but whatever) is find a concert you'd like to go to that's lisenced (requiring you to be 21 to enter)...

Actually, I've never been a drinker.. I grew up in the bar business, so drinking never really seemed interesting to me.. so I already had "digestive troubles" from drinking water (rather than the more advisable beer) before I ever got malaria... all in all, my birthday fell someplace within the 5 weeks I spent in a dark room with no running water or airconditioning in the Philippines last summer.. :p

Although, I think a close second may belong to a guy I met standing in line for 8 hours at the San Bernadino DMV a month or so ago.. it was his birthday, but his 22nd, not 21st.. a small consolation maybe.

ooh i'm 21 in 4 months and i need ideas too. in the same situation in that getting trashed no longer holds any interest...

the only thing i'm thinking of is just getting some friends together and going out for a meal, and then going out for another meal with family (which consists of just my mum and dad... no extended family really). sad thing is i've lost a lot of friends in the last year so i'm not even sure if a) that many people would want to come and b) if i'd like to see a number of them myself.

oh look i'm hijacking another thread to be about me. i do this all the time :headbang:
well thats my suggestion for you too - can't go wrong with a simple meal somewhere nice

I was on bed rest when I turned 21, but when I turned 22 I had a slumber party, it wasn't very sophisticated though, basically we ate a bunch of junk food, sang a lot of karaoke, and played some stupid games, it was tons of fun. :D

I think I am going to do it again this summer, you know have a slumber party, I may rent out a hotel room this time though.

Make sure you keep sharpies handy so you can kep track of your drinks via tally on your stomach. If you can, get chicks to tally for you. Start off drinking 'Sparks' while playing 'Scene It'. Don't stop drinking Sparks until the game is over. Then go to a bar with your friends- let them buy you drinks trying to make it to about 15. If you get that far, get home before you get really bad, and play beer pong until you finally hit 21 drinks, get into an argument (blacked out) with one of your best friends over who is the better lacrosse player. end up throwing beer and wine bottles at him and start a 6 or 7 person fist fight. Hit someone with a fire extinguisher, realize it was the wrong thing to do. Go to your bathroom, take a shower, and pass out naked in your bed. Be sure to lock your door so nobody can get in later. The next morning, wonder why you feel like you are mad at your friend. Go find him and compare battle wounds. Talk about your drunken stupidity before going to Chipotle with the crew to help ease everyone's hangover pain.

Or something along those lines

If you do decide to go to Vegas, make sure you decide ahead of time how much money you are willing to lose. I went last new years ('04) and wouldn't have had much fun if I wasn't drinking. If you don't go for the gambling, try to catch a comic or other such show, they might actually make the trip worth while. Then again, if you can afford to hit up Vegas, why not head somewhere warm with a beach? Or have a poker tourney with some friends- and I mean tourney, where you play until there is one left with all the chips- could take forever, have some liquor, not too much, but enough to stimulate 'sophisticated' conversation and treat yourselves to some nice cigars...

Get you and all your buddies dressed up in tuxes and dresses (depending on gender/preference). The go do something average and everday dressed up. Go to a movie, grab a bit at BK (go in, not the drive through). It is actually lots of fun to see what reactions you get.

You can do a volunteer project such as sorting food or cleaning up an area in your neighbor. It would be a good way to show that as an adult that now has gained all of your privileges, you receognize your responsibility to the community that you live in.

I think it would be somewhere online and you can save the money instead of giving it to some corporation, like a real anarchist

go out and get drunk, get absolutely plastered

...preferably with friends you can trust to pull you out of trouble.

Most places should offer you one free drink -- don't waste it.

And make sure you milk your friends. You'd do the same for them, so make sure you don't have to pay too much (if anything at all) on your birthday.

(lol, i'm usually all for paying your own way, proud anti-socialist that I am, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime birthday... it should be one of the greatest nights of your life, so let them take you out and show you a good time)

look around for something sophisticated to take a 21 year old woman to.

get dressed up, go to the best restaurant you can afford, order a really good bottle of wine, go to a play, concert, opera, whatever is available.
