Who wants to define Prog Rock for me?

Before anyone says 'look it up', I just felt it would be interesting to get different people's opinions on this, rather than find out the dictionary definition. I know eg Genesis & 70s/80s Pink Ployd is considered Prog - & highly excellent the Floyd are too, luckily got to see them @ Live8 in Hyde Park which was so frickin great - BUT what else would you include? How broad is the net cast here?
I know this is a totally pointless survey, but how many of the posts on here aren't? ;)

I really don't like these classifications, but as a Prog fan I'd say that Progressive Rock is usually characterized by great musicianship and elaborate musical parts (usually with odd time signatures). However, each case is a case (and that's the best part, so you don't have 50 bands that sound the same). One thing that I find quite particular are concept albums, I don't know other musical styles that make them.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band? -er...that is a concept album, right?-
Hell, I can go more obscure and think of a couple of metal ones as well.

Hence many afirm that Progressive music started with that album. And I didn't said that there aren't any, I said I don't know any. I believe other bands (like Emperor) make concept albums, but my point is that it looks like the whole idea came from prog bands.

Actually the whole idea of concept albums came from SF Sorrow by the Pretty Things and an album the Who put out the following year, and I don't think either band has ever been described as progressive.

Any idea why Hawkwind keep getting described as prog? It isn't like they've ever had a line up that clan play that flashy muso stuff with time changes and solos all over the place. Silver Machine is hardly 2112, is it?

I still think it's weird that Lemmy was in Hawkwind.

Rush is prog rock...
Or one of the best prog bands...

No bugger else would give him a gig at the time, it seems. It was the synth player (Dik Mik)'s idea to bring him in because the bassist they had at the time was refusing to turn up if they weren't getting paid for playing and they were doing a lot of free concerts at that point.

If you've ever heard the live recording of the Sex Pistols at Chelmsford Prison there's some interesting stuff about Hawkwind in the liner notes, btw.

I've not seen that one, but Lydon always claims that Hawkwind are one of his favourite bands. He was well into the Pink Fairies and Van Der Graaf Generator as well, both of whom could be considered prog by a few definitions at least.
