Eh, why shell out lots of money at the garage when you can ask the world for help on NS General first? Yeah, that's what I thought. :p
So, yesterday morning I started my car, backed out of the parking spot, turned onto the road, and accelerated. And then - the car kept accelerating. A lot. And all by itself. With me first taking my foot off the gas, then actually braking. I drove about 500 meters before managing to stop the damn thing by fully stepping on the brakes and hoping my braking would win out against the car's accelerating, which, after some very agonizing seconds, it did.
I tried starting it again a few times, but as soon as I turned the key, the motor would rev up really loudly. On maybe the fifth try, suddenly it was back to normal. Hasn't acted up since.
It's a 1996 Opel Astra (crummy medium sized European car) and it's an automatic. Temperatures are low here at the moment, but not that low (maybe -5°/-10°C that night).
So - any car experts out there who have any idea what the hell was going on there? And if it will happen again? And, most importantly, if fixing it will be as expensive as I fear it will be ?
Any answers greatly appreciated! Even though I'll be offline soon; but I'll come back all hopeful and excited first thing in the morning, promise! :)
ETA: Only saw HMW's broken finger thread just now, so no, this is not a copycat thingy. Guess calling for internet diagnoses of RL damage is the thing to do tonight.
