Round the answer to the nearest power of 10 and then express your answer as the order of magnitude. For instance, if your estimated answer is 3 x 10^5, enter 5. If your estimated answer is 8.7 x 10^5, you should enter 6 (rounding up to the next power of 10).

my answer is: 2.5 x 10^9

I don't get them either, it sounds like patent nonsense :/. Are you sure there's nothing at the top saying "Read directions carefully" and then it says "After you read this, put down your pencil, stop working, and don't tell anyone else."?

i think i get it now, so my answer would be 10 right?

If I'm following the directions, I agree with "10".

Have you tried this forum?

It makes sense. All of these are of the form A * 10^B. You round to the nearest number of the form 10^C where C = B or B+1 depending on the value of A. If A<5.5 C=B, if A>=5.5 C=B+1. Then you answer with C. Btw the answer is 9 not 10

Good way to put it, IMO.

look at this impossible question:

How many people could fit into the largest office building in the world? Assume that everybody must be standing on thefloor.

im gonna be up all night

42

1)It is a really cool answer.
2)The question doesn't ask for the maximum number of people. 42 people can certainly fit in the largest office building in the world.

For the office building question? 6? How so?

EDIT: Wait, just go it. Limited by people, not by volume.

I would think in formal discrete mathematics, you would have to establish that there is an office building with essentially unlimited internal displacement. The phrasing of the question would seem to require examing the set of "office buildings in the world" and establishing the upper boundary.

But, if you add the phrase "the largest office building in the world has unlimited space", then I see where its going.

It depends on the rule system used for rounding.. it is not always A<5.5, it coudld be A<5,

but in this case it is not important,
as 2.6 is still rounded down.

I don't see what is difficult about it - they are asking for the order of magnitude of the answer rounded to the nearest power of 10.

2 500 000 000 rounded to the nearest power of 10 gets rounded down
to 1 000 000 000
which still has 9 zeroes, and so the magnitude is 9

870 000 rounded to the nearest power of 10 gets rounded up to 1 000 000,
which has 6 zeroes, and so the magnitude is 6

If the entire population of the United States forms a human chain by holding hands, how many times can such a chain be wrapped around the earth's equator?

my equations:

avg height of peopple in the us is 5 ft 9 inches= 1.7526 meters
population of the us is: 300000000

1.7526 x (3 x 10^8)=5.3 x 10^8

circumference of earth= 25000 miles= 4 x 10^7 m

(5.3 x 10^8)/(4 x 10^7)= 13.25

hmm this doesnt sound right

You want armspan, and isn't it closer to 245,000,000? Anyways, that's about right with these numbers....
