The phrase "get a life" is used an insult/piece of advice. What would you consider to be the definition of a "life" in this context?

Who the hell knows...I sure don't.

All I know is that if you're good at repartees (like I am, although I don't use them online), you can easily turn it on them.

I don't know. I don't use that phrase. It's just a useless catchphrase left over from the '90s as far as I'm concerned. It rates up there with "Talk to the hand" for cornyness.

I think it implies that the person should get their own life, or worry about their own instead of others. Like when my roommate was lecturing me a few days ago I said "Oh please girl, get a life" -- meaning that she should have more important things to worry about leaving the heater on while the windows open (we dont have a dehumidifier and it gets humid when the window is closed!).

its just like, you know: chill out, you're buggin.

the life in "get a life" is one where you have enough interests of your own that you dont have to fill your time meddling in other people's business.

Yeah, but I've heard it used by people against others who have a social life, and often a life far richer and more entertaining than that of the insulter.

Do you really think anybody who frequents this forum has the slightest clue what 'a life' is? Hehehe. :p

The life is simply one that does not unduly tax that of others.

Here's my thoughts on the subject:

When someone says "get a life" (or a similar phrase that uses the word "life" in the same way), they actually mean "a life like mine", i.e. conform to what is socially acceptable.

They are not necessarily consciously aware that they are advocating conformism, of course.

I'm more often told to 'grow up' and 'act my age'. I usually throw pastries at those people. *nod*

The idea that one should stop doing what they enjoy simply because they have reached a certain age is repulsive to me.

When one person on the internet chides another person on the internet for spending too much time on the internet commenting to other people I always chuckle a little.

It's a slow-wit's insult. A bubblegum cheerleader insult. It's dismissive. It says that "I do not have the capacity for this arguement or discussion and neither should you. Your concerns or interests should be my concerns or interests or your value is below mine."

Granted, I've been tempted by it (I had a roommate in college that for some fucked up reason insisted on talking to me every half an hour. About fucking everything, then would just stand there. "'Kay, that all, man?" Then he'd get huffy. Eventually I just said I didn't need to know every little thing at every moment and that I've had roommates that I wouldn't see for months at a time. He was horrified by this. At this point I wanted to tell him to get a life, but his problem was far more complex.)

"Life" means a better use of your time. If there is so little going on in yourlife that you don't consider it a waste of your time to talk to the person delivering the insult then clearly you aren't doing anything worthwhile with your life. It's not really an insult. It means that you are meant for better things than conversation with the person telling you to "get a life."

The implication with telling someone to "get a life" is "you don't have a life". I would think life in this case would be defined as a collection of purposeful activities.

Obviously none of us have what "a life" is if we're actually discussing it here.

*checks notes*

Wait, has this been brought up earlier?

The way it has been used against me, (in Swedish -- "skaffa ett liv") it is a way for the average idiot to condemn people for not having a "normal" social life and not constantly acting "cool" and socializing with popular people.

See my article here (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Get_a_life).

It means become more like them. They can't stand you they way you are sometimes. They want you to conform to their mode of life. They want you to be like them. They want you to be their little robot...or better yet, monkey. Because monkeys are cooler and sling poo...wait...slinging poo is something they probably don't want you to do...robot's better.

Don't worry about the little things, especially the little things in other's lives. Worry about the big things in your life. Worry about important things that make life important.
