Interesting music idea

I think it's interesting anyway. The basic idea is that I name a town/city and someone else gives a genre of music or a specific band to describe that city, backed up with a good reason. Debate on whether or not reasons are good enough is positively encouraged.
For example: London - drum'n'bass. Lively, you can always find something new, but on the whole you know exactly what you're going to get.

Now for the next poster - Rome.

And please don't be too obvious - if someone says Kingston, Jamaica, don't come back with reggae.

can it be songs that describe a city?

eiter classicla, but that a bit obvious, or new age jazz... cos its old, but yet its still quite lively...

Rome - Opera. Loud and obnoxious and uncannily camp, what with the Pope/Vatican and all, but with a nice air of culture and a gelato-like smooth after-taste of cute guys in tight clothes.

I say: Stockholm.

Stock, Aitken and Waterman - the nordic pop stylings are quite similar to the atrocious 80s manufactured music. Plus it has "stock" in it. Double whammy.

I take it you've never listened to actual Swedish pop, and not the crap we export.

I would have gone with the Cardigans - somewhat hip but not edgy, inoffensively nice but not mindnumbingly conservative.

Not that I've ever been to Stockholm or anything.

Good! Your're supposed to give a new town, though.

And - duh, sorry:

Anchorage - Indie rap.

Why? Because plenty punk ass "gangster" white boys listen to mainstream rap and think they're cool, but there is a strong minority of people who have much better taste. So I say Indie rap, because hell, it's still mindless rap, but with a little bit of taste.

Berlin
Obvious one would be trance...
Erm...having never been to Berlin, it's difficult, and I want to avoid the German stereotype.
The Rolling Stones - almost always respected, a difficult past in places, but still going strong. Understated yet still somehow over the top.

Next: Los Angeles.

LA: I hate to say it, but Aqua. "Life in plastic is fantastic."

How about... Montevideo.

Punk. While LA wasn't the first place Punk emerged, it sported the largest, by far most long-lived scene which produced a majority of the big names of the movement.

Do you also find the Ark abominable, or do they qualify as aurally pleasing?

Not as such, as far as the 'pop' goes, but if you look at the music which has come out of Sweden and been accepted by the outside world (ABBA/Europe/Ace of Base/Whale) these snotty-nosed tearaways and their ilk actually stand up quite well, if only for the brazenly authentic product they served up.

Mostly abominable, except for the lead singer being a sexy little bitch and "One of Us Is Gonna Die Young." (http://www.emi.se/artists/theark/oouigdy/index.htm)

That is one catchy fucking song.

What's funny is that I looked up Ark on Yahoo Music and what I got was this death metal band.

I have heard of Sondre Lerche and Kings of Convenience, think they are from Norway. Is that similar to what you are talking about?

That's 'cause they're very queer and were our musical champions, so to speak, in the successful debate that gave us equal adoption rights.

I see what you mean by queer. They remind me a bit of the Scissor Sisters in some of those poses. Out of curiosity then, which Swedish pop bands would you recommend? Other than the Ark and the Cardigans, I have been recommended to little else.

Kent. The Hives. Soundtrack of Our Lives. Moneybrother. Marit Bergman (http://www.maritbergman.net/). Mando Diao. Sofie Zelmani. Laleh. Jenny Wilson. Hans Appelqvist. Those are the ones I just pull off the top of my head, and I mentioned some in the post I linked to.
