this is a thread for all the photographers - budding, professional, hobbyists, all of you - of NS general. its been a while since we've had one :)

so share your favourite photos, what camera(s) do you use, what kind of photography do you enjoy? anything and everything photo related...

myself, i love taking landscape pictures - especially of sunsets :)
going to get a real wide-angle lens (14mm i guess) soon to get better piccys of them. got a polarising filter for christmas and its come in handy for a couple of sunsets already... not quite as stunning a result from the filter as i would have hoped, but still...

i use a canon E20D with 24-80mm image stabalised lens. it does the job rather well i think :D (read: fucking awesome camera! :p)
(edit: before then i used an olympus e10... always been a digital boy, me. i'd love to experiment with film and developing the photos myself, but i've become used to the instant nature of digital... plus i can photoshop pretty well)

some of my pictures can be found here (http://www.hlj.me.uk/myPictures.htm), but some of my favourites below:

beach sunset (http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/Poole%20beach%20pics/Copy%20of%20Poole%20Beach%2011%2712%2705%20375.jpg)

Can't add anything from this computer but some pics can be found at
http://sinuhe.jypoly.fi/~a8191/portfolio.htm

It's not really a portfolio. It's just the result of one photography course in school. Landscapes and portraits are decent. Some single photos on other sections too.

I've used several cameras, mostly on film (and with Nikon F70). I've finally bought digital (Finepix 10) but I still prefer film. I like to develop my own pics. I also have Kiev 88 but I don't have any digital version of pictures taken with it. (I have negative adapter only for 35mm film and the pics are way too big for my scanner.)

I really liked the beach sunset and lake reflection. Those were my favourites. All very good, but those were the best IMO.

Edit: Actually the same picture on your website (beach) is even better.

Proud owner and Operator of a Nikon D70 SLR, 18-75mm lense. Planning on getting another lense soon ^^

I suppose I don't have a general forte to what I take photos of, just when inspiration strikes.

I'll try and get some photographs online soon :)

:) Thank you very much too. I like that swan pic too. That's quite old, I took it with a very sad little pocket camera.

I mean the same beach sunset picture.
this. (http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/Poole%20beach%20pics/375.htm)

The guy on that pic is my brother with his first baby (2 weeks in that pic). I love the look on his face. The scan is really poor quality. Linux and Canon is not a match made in heaven. It's alright with negative film but very bad with dia.

its sometimes amazing the shots you can get with even the crappiest of cameras... its not the camera that makes a good picture, but what you're pointing it at - the camera can just enhance it ;)
as i've heard said elsewhere, good pictures are 70% luck, 5% skill, and 25% having enough film/memory to take lots of them and hope one turns out right :p

Yay PM! Good thread. I recently got an old Rollei B35 manual compact (linky (http://www.mediajoy.com/en/cla_came/rollei_b35/)), off a Great Aunt who couldn't use it anymore. It may not be a SLR, but the lens is excellent for senic mountain shots. Unfortunately, none of these are online, so I give you this instead: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y67/Anabasis/BlackdenEdge.jpg
Although a bit washed out in the scanner, I really like the way the light plays across the Yorkshire Dales in this one. It was on of those rare days when the sunlight takes on a really golden feel to it. The camera? A disposable compact, £7.99! Like PM says, 70% luck.

I'm a hobbyist, last summer went to Morocco and had my camera next to me the entire time- took hundreds of pictures in hopes that some would come out- I have some up herehttp://wm.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2001480&l=cb88e&id=7601909
not all of them are up for photography's sake- some are pics for the fam and friends, but take a look.

Within the next year and a half I have trips planned to Egypt and St. John, hopefully I'll get some nice shots there as well. I use a Nikon N55 with 2 different lenses for now- I'm looking into digital for the trips coming up.

The White Stripes are headlining. The only band i'm really hanging out to see is Iggy Pop and the Stooges, though. But it'll be fun. I'm sure there'll be some good local acts too. :)

Great thread PM.....I cant get into my Image Shack photos for some reason. I guess I'll have to host pics somewhere else. I took a lot of photos on the road trip to Oregon and back. I have some rally good shots of the ocean, sunsets, some really pretty ones of rocks &mountains in New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado. I hope to get them hosted somewhere before this thread ends. If I had the time, I'd love to get into some serious photography.

Aww, shit. You guys have all the fun. Bands only tour here intermittently...it'd be heaps easier to see good acts in the UK or America. Usually festivals here are just thrown together from whoever they can get to agree to make the trip.

Although I did get to see Mudhoney, who are one of the few groups I truly worship, last year. I never thought i'd get that chance. So it's not all bad, I guess. But I can whinge about the lack of good metal festivals. The only "metal" act on tomorrow is Mudvayne. *whinges* :p

its mostly a matter of taking your camera with you whenever you go anywhere interesting... not really "serious photography" (unless you mean doing it professionally), cos as i said, its the scene and the place that makes a good photo, not whether the person behind the lens is 'serious' or not. just be sure to keep your camera with you as often as you can and you'll end up with some seriously good photos i'm sure :)
and it seems like you already have, too :p
if you like, you could email them to me and i could host them on my server. alternatively, there are portfolio websites out there you could use (like this (http://flickr.com/)one)

(there are tonnes of metal fests in europe, mostly in the summer. lots of them in germany (like wachen), but there's download (donnington) here in the uk, and reading festival tends to have some good rock. then there's glastonbury - not metal but the mother of all festivals! you'll have to check em all out when you come on your tour here next year :)

thanks PM! TG me your email and I'll share some pics with you even if I dont get them all hosted. You are absolutely right. I used to keep a camera with me. I love pics of nature and all, but I also love candid shots of people. I took a picture one time of an elderly man sitting on a bench, handing some bread to a small child.(they were feeding the birds). The way it came out was truely beautiful. It was like I captured a precious moment between two generations and you could see the love and admiration for each other and how they were sharing a moment that would turn out to be a memory one day. It sonds like a boring picture, but sometimes the most simple things turn out to be spectacular.

That's the kind of picture I love the most. Short moments of life. Nothing spectacular, just ordinary life of ordinary people. I also like street photographing. You know, documents of everyday moments. There are real treasures out there. And it's so much easier with small digital cameras because people don't (always) notice that you're taking pictures.

oh i know totally what you mean... its just a matter of snapping the moment. the beautiful thing is that it can mean something different to everyone - if its a strong image then there'll be a common theme or a strong idea conveyed, but sometimes the best images are the ones that are most subjective. we add our own interepretation to what we see, and thats what makes photography more than just snapping pictures of the world around us, but actually an art form in my mind :)

i'll TG you now though i won't be able to upload them for a while cos i really, really need to do some work before i go out this evening (and i've spent too long on this thread already! )

Damn, those snowy pics look exactly same as few pics my boyfriend has token. I love strong contrast (especially in BW).

I have the same problem but I try to get used to it. That's one of the reasons why I finally bought a digi. I can take pictures so that noone will notice (small digi that is). It's also more comfortable when travelling. That Kiev 88 weights more than a kilo without any lens and the zoom is even heavier. I don't want to feel like a mule while travelling.

Ooh, lots of pretty pictures in this thread! I'll try and get some of mine scanned tomorrow (have been meaning to do that forever anyway, so this is as good an excuse as any to finally do it).

@PM: Love the warped trees. Also the aptly named "stunning sunset panoramic".

@Helioterra: The bus. The glorious bus. What a great picture. (Well, it's hard to mess up the friendly vibes of a VW bus, but that picture really captures the "soul" of it. Might be the light, partly).

@Rasselas: Ooh, my kind of landscape. Where is that? Iceland? (Although, wouldn't Iceland be greener? Hmm.) And no, with landscapes like that, photos never do it justice, no matter how good they are. The frame of a camera, no matter how wide the angle, can never encompass the immense whole that the eye sees. But, eh, I still use up rolls of film trying. :p

Iceland or Hawaii is my guess. The first one looks like a line of scoria cones running along a fissure. Gotta be Iceland.

Lanzarote? But what's with the white spots (esp. in the 2nd picture), I thought that was snow?

I can't remember how far I was into the park at that point - but the white bits are probably houses and villages?

and stupid phone!! died right when i needed it and stranded me on a train platform for 20 minutes waiting for a connecting train when i could have phoned to be picked up in 5 minutes!

Not bad, not bad at all. (BTW, the poster of the Ladybower pic, are you local to there, 'cos I'm not far off... ;)

I've managed to get around 2Gb of pictures off of my camera (Fuji S5500, 4Mb, up to 10x optical zoom, which I'm hoping to extend with an Olympus branded screw-on, and maybe get a wide-angle for as well, and I must say that I much prefer interesting clouds (including sunsets) and landscapes and urban landscapes (contrasting building facias) to people and the like, though I've got some decent shots of various things from jousting to squirrels...

Not pursued any method for them putting online, yet, though thought about it often, so I'm afraid I can't display my wares, but you may well have encouraged me to go ahead with my plans to do so...

I've wanted to really learn how to photograph for years, but as of now I'm still only a tourist with a weakness for great landscapes and a 10-year-old point-and-shoot (not digital, obviously). But it's a pretty good camera and it has that coveted (by me) relatively wide 28 mm angle and a shutter for "panorama" views, so I'm happy. :p
Also, if the scenery is right, you can't really screw up too much.

The pictures I put up are mainly from the south-western US and the Bolivian Altiplano, plus a few others.

Heh, thanks! :) Yeah, those seagulls were really playing along there (though the second one from the right only just barely grasped the concept, the little bugger). That was really a lucky moment with all those stripes going on there.

I tend to take a lot of those "tilted" pictures, really just to cram as much landscape into the frame as possible (although the way it looks here, I bet there was something decidedly non-stripey lying around that had to be kept out of the frame :D). That's fine for prints, but the information age isn't so keen on tilted angles, it seems; I had to leave out lots of favorites to avoid permanent neck dislocation.

If you don't have a homepage or blog that you can link, you could open an account on flickr.com or photobucket (is that the name?) or something, and upload the pictures there, and then link them here.

hey, same here. But we all live around the globe so it could be interesting to see few shots of how NSers spend their Saturday nights. It would be very misleading if I'd catch anything really interesting. But even if you think that you're not going to do anything interesting it may still interest the rest of us. Your life is not ordinary to us :D
in the interest of this, i have put up a page of some snaps from my "ordinary life" from the last couple of days.

http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/out+about/outnabout.htm

the very first one is a friend of mine eating a rice-paper flower in a chineese restaurant on saturday (after which my cameraphone died), and the rest are from Winchester yesterday. might be interesting for you americans cos its so ooold :p
i mean, i wanted to get a pic of the oldest house in the city (constructed 1492 IIRC) but it was the other side of town... so those pics will have to do. i was visiting the farmers' market there and its about 20 minutes drive from where i live in southampton (a much more modern, industrial city).
hopefully someone actually will find that interesting :p

What the heck, I'll throw a few of mine up. All taken this winter. All with my little Canon A95. Small enough to leave in my jacket pocket so it is always around for when an image presents itself to me. Flexible enough in features that I can usually get the shot. Even if I did have an SLR, I'd still probably wind up shooting more with the A95 because it is always with me.

Anyway, for all you southern people, this is part of what winter looks like.

The deer lives in a chunk of protected forrest that is bordered by a couple of busy roads, and has a whole bunch of hiking/skiing paths running through it, so he's grown up without learning to really fear humans. Still, I don't think I got much closer than 75 feet or so before he headed back through the trees.

especially important seeing how my dad and i want to set up an online ecommerce photo gallery soon. not really for these (sort of) pics but for the photos i take for work - we get quite a lot of press interest and have had some of our photos in national papers and magazines in the last few years :) be nice to make em pay for using them! ;)

Spain, natural colours, no tampering apart from the use of CT18 slide film (warms up the colours a bit). Just late sun against a black sky. Got quite wet afterwards.

Hey, thanks, mate.
(Not living in the States, btw)

The ones you chose were all taken in the neighbourhood of Lodève, just north of Montpellier, south of France. I'm planning on moving there permanently in a few years.

Just google "Cirque de Mourèze", "Cirque de Navacelles", "Cirque de boût du monde", "Fozières", "Larzac", ... for some info and pics on the region.

I just got a film back from developing, on cd as well. Some pictures I'm rather pleased with. Others are not so good. Taking the back off my camera without reeling the film back in was not the best idea. I only lost 2 foggy pictures.

Lets see if Flikr works: Photo linky (http://www.flickr.com/photos/92966510@N00/94109106/in/set-72057594057526122/) EDIT: w00t, seems to work.

Got a couple of other ones off a friend, but I'll have to ask before I release them.

how did you take that picture? was it film or digital? how did you get all the elements to show up so well?

i can never get the moon to show up well in a photo. not that ive tried much. but do you have some tips for me? there are times when the moon rises in such a way and such a spot that it screams out for a photo.

It was long before digital: Fuji 100 slide film.
The moon always shows up too tiny. I took a shot of the moon (underexposed) with a tele first, manually blocked the transport and superimposed the ice/birds. No tricks afterwards.

Yeah, I figured he was a living statue, but it seems I underestimated his determination - he had pigeons sitting on him all the time? Damn, that is impressive (and also explains why he *didn't* shoo this away, obviously) though a bit creepy. Did he attract them with anything special? I don't know, like bird seed on his head or something? :p Because you'd think that no matter how seemingly motionless you stand around, pigeons would still know you're not really a slab of stone and wouldn't try sitting on your head...

Hmmm... maybe he had an aura of calm and tranquillity that drew them in. Maybe like some latter-day Buddha or Homer Simpson in the episode where he creates his own religion, such was his inner peace that the birds of the field flocked to him for shelter. Maybe he had bird food in his pockets. Who knows? :)

I have about 87 photos uploaded here:

Some were taken with little disposable cameras, but most were taken with a Canon 300V, a film camera available for about €200.

no not really, its just pretty impressive and cool to achieve that effect with a photo, especially seeing how paintings can be made from the imagination meaning the composition can be essentially perfect. taking real-life photos that look like that takes skill :)

And I actually like this one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/92966510@N00/113908307/in/set-72057594084402430/). It's really disorienting. Probably a mix of the long view, the random raking angles of the mountainside and that slice of blue sky, and the fact that while the snow on the mountains makes them look all high and alpine you can still clearly make out the houses on the plain. Weird. :)

It takes skill to photograph a sunset without making it a silhouette. Most people fuck it up so all they get is a bright spot of the sun with everything around it dark, but this looks good.

Here (http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/stardust923/Random%20pics/) are some pics taken with a Gateway digital camera, either by myself or my boyfriend. Not very professional or anything, but they turned out alright. My favourites are the ones around Mont St. Michel.

Wow, great pics everybody! :)

@ Il Ruffino: I especially like the tree ones in the beginning, plus the one of the boardwalk you took with your phone - gives it just the right atmosphere of melancholic "has seen better times". The one of the sushi was a bit unexpected, though. :p

@ Rameria: Ooh, I love this (http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/stardust923/Random%20pics/?action=view&current=Footprintsinthesand.jpg) one. I don't know, but no matter how often I see Mont St. Michel, it still looks like something out of a fairy tale, or the Lord of the Rings, or something. A whole mountain island basically made out of houses and churches, just sitting there surrounded by water. Incredible. Would it be very weird if I asked you if I could use that as wallpaper for my desktop? You can totally say no! (Because I guess it would be pretty weird...)

@ Carisbrooke: That fourth one? Just wow. One can almost see God stepping down to earth :p. Did you photoshop that in any way or is that the "original" picture? Because that would have been one hell of a perfect moment.

Lol, it totally does - I was thinking you should offer it to some of these American Christian internet sites, but then I thought hell no, what a waste of a perfectly good pic! :p
But I love that it's not photoshopped - I don't know, I can see how it's a great thing to be able to do, especially seeing how I have enough pictures that would be "perfect" (well, no, not really) if there just wasn't this tiny little bit wrong with the color, the contrast, or what have you. But at the same time I absolutely *hate* how these days you can't even look at a picture anymore and know if it's been "tinkered" with or not. Personally, I'm much more impressed when I see a really good picture like that that is not photoshopped than when I see a maybe even more perfect one that is.

That one was taken two years ago when my study abroad group went to Mont St. Michel. We went on a guided walk across the quicksand from Mont St. Michel to that little island nearby, and those tracks are our footprints. And, feel free to use it as wallpaper, that's actually really flattering. :)

Indeed a weird question. I'm none too sure either, I think it's over by the Champs-Elysee/Arc de Triomphe, since it was one of the last metros we got on and I actually wanted to take a picture of it, since it was taking us away. I reacted too late and this was the result :D.

Add me to that list too. I may crop a bit, and apply a touch of sharpening after a resize has blurred it a bit to restore it to how it looked at full size, but it is a rare event that I do any more than that.

There have been rare cases where I caught a once-in-a-lifetime moment that needed a bit more work to make a picture viewable (e.g, my daughter's first steps where I had the colour balance miss-set on the camera and needed to correct it in post-processing to avoid her having the skin tone of Marvin the Martian), but I could count those times on my fingers.

If I play with any more than that it becomes digital art, not digital photography.

Still, some people are unneccessarily anal in this matter too. If you go back to the masters you discover that they spent as much time figuring out how to print each image as they did taking the picture to start off with. Ansel Adams, for example, wrote copious notes on what sections of his negatives to dodge and burn and for how long to bring out all the details in a print in exactly the way he wanted. And others also came up with various strategies on development to achieve certain looks.

Call it primitive post-processing if you will.....

And others also came up with various strategies on development to achieve certain looks.

Call it primitive post-processing if you will.....Many of my pictures have been edited, but not much. I generally change the contrast/brightness slightly and crop them, but other than that I don't edit them. Some are obvious edits, like my Nebula (http://static.flickr.com/1/122359038_1e3adcb347_m.jpg) pic. Some are ones that had things like power lines in them that I didn't like, so I edited that out. Note that these edits don't change the essence of the picture. One that I've done powerline edits on:

http://static.flickr.com/35/121315466_419c4d5e32_m.jpg

Other pictures, however, need some work to make them really good. Look at this one, the original:

http://static.flickr.com/51/111168052_a16235218c_m.jpg

Now look at my finished version:

http://static.flickr.com/51/111127799_60c6f8c579_m.jpg

Clearly, there are some times when dramatic edits are in order. I tend to think of editing not so much as destroying the original picture, but enhancing the idea that I have of how a scene is supposed to look. I use photography as an art medium, for entertainment. If I was a photojournalist, perhaps I'd have a different opinion, but for now, I just like making things look good. :)

Thank you kindly. I joined photo.net just as I got my first digital camera (an Olympus Camedia 3020z) and if you look through, from the top folder to the last one, you can see some improvement in my work.

what is this "sunrise" of which you speak?

there's a 6 o'clock in the morning now? :p

(still love it - its the colours and the patterns in the sky that make either sunsets or sunrises truly magical :))

Well, it was about 5am and I was just heading to bed when I looked out the window...:p

Yea, completely. I always find twilight the nicest looking part of the day; colours all somehow look different, more magical, almost.

ah i was wondering why one would be up so early, but not having made it to bed yet is a very valid excuse :p

oh absolutley! i don't have that much experience with dawn twilight tbh (;)) but dusk twilight is a wonderful (yes, almost magical) time when the colours are muted and different, the attention of the eye is drawn away from the minutia and detail of the ground and everyday world and up to the colours and patterns painting themselves across the sky in a way that will never be seen again, all changing second-by-second... you're drawn to something grander and it, for me, reminds me that there's more to life than petty problems and routines of everyday life. i also love how still it can be, and often so quiet around that time (especially this time of year), and how the dulled colours of the world cover everyone with the same brush... again, petty differences are put aside as the world puts itself to sleep.

then again that's probably totally different from what you were talking about/how you see it... that's the true beauty of it: it means and appears different to everybody :)

I don't think I see it quite as philosophically as you :p

But yeah...it brings out an almost other-worldly feel to everything.

One of the things I particularly like is driving through Belfast city centre at twilight on a perfectly clear day.

Mountains framed by their silhouette against the sunset, the colours of the sky, and the dimmed lights of the cars, reflecting off other cars, and all shiny surfaces, the buildings with the lights just appearing in the windows...the giant H&W cranes against the darkening sky (http://www.crawfordgalleryofphotography.com/big/belfast/black/b5_twilit.jpg) (not my pic).

The changing colours, silhouettes, and interesting shadows make you forget that it's an ordinary boring building, or car, that you're looking at...you tend to focus much more on the look of the thing, and you realise...'hang on a minute, where I live is actually bloody beautiful'. A nice way to lift the worries of the day.
