i studied latin for two years at school but sucked ass like i do with all languages. the strict grammar was especially difficult to handle

The topic is "What Mystery religions were popular in the Roman Empire and how were they persecuted?", only about 500 to go!

Not being a grammar freak or anything, by erunt should be in the imperative, domus should be in the accusative, and Romanus should be in the plural.

Have any of you read the Aeneid in Latin? That's what we're reading currently in my fourth-year Latin class. It's quite enjoyable, in my opinion. More so than De Bello Gallico, haha. I despised that.

I am taking Latin classes, lets see if any of you can guess any of these sentances:

Omnium consensus capax imperii nisi imperasset.

Vulpem pilum mutat, non mores.

(I like this one the most):

Non pote non sapere qui se stultum intellegit.

(Well, maybe I like this one alittle more(it was found on a Roman grave inscription, if you think about it, it makes sense)):

I took three years of Latin in high school. That was 40 years ago. All I remember is the first 10 lines of Virgil's Aenead (sp), the first line of Caesar's Gallic wars, and veni, vidi, vici. (and the first six words of row, row, row your boat in Latin - Dunc, dunc remus dunc, flumine secundo).

About the only latin I can remember from three years of it in high school comes from one of the epigrams of Martial:

Cunnum Charinus lingit et tamen pallet

It was just good to know that there was something out there in Latin that wasn't exactly wholesome.

I always liked Martial. I didn't read any of his epigrams in the original Latin, but my high school library had a translation of his epigrams. I don't think they knew what was in it or it would have been removed.

Actually, with this one, it helps to read the whole thing. That's just the last line. I just like how through most of it, et tamen pallet translates easily enough into "and yet he is pale", but for that last line, it also takes on other shades of meaning that don't quite go with the words: "and yet he doesn't blush" "he's not embarrassed by it", etc.

That's where studying any language becomes enjoyable: when you have a collection of words that does not have a straightforward translation to them and you just have to be able to appreciate it the way it's written.
