Who knows what happened in Munich in 1972?

It's amazing what you can learn from an internet ad for a film. I must admit I'd been completely ignorant of this event. I checked up what happened to see what had been 'romantisced', I'm not that naive. But still... woah. And to name the ensuing Mossad operation 'Wrath of God'... pretty emotionally tense.

They made a film about the opening of the S-Bahn tunnel from the Hauptbahnhof on one side of the city to the Ostbahnhof on the other? This I got to see. How could you not have known about that?

Palestinian group 'Black Sept' got pissed off when they heard the IOC turned down an application for a Palestinian delegation to take part in the Munich Olympics.

Took it out on the Israeli delegation. Also brought worldwide attention to the Palestinian cause. Still a bit iffy over the shoot out where everyone died- some blame might be attributed to the German forces, others blame simply the Palestinians.

Gentlemen, we have failed in our mission. The poster known as 'The Infinite Dunes' has learned the truth. Our attempts to keep him in ignorance of the real workings of the world and its true masters have not been successful. He must be destroyed.

Proving the new adage: If it ain't happened in a movie, it hasn't really happened.

Chalk one up for the education system!

That was also, if memory serves, the year that Spitz collected 7 gold medals in the pool. And the year that the US finally lost Gold in Basketball...thanks to an "interesting" ruling by the ref.

Oh yeah, and in October that year....a lot of people in Munich got drunk.

But it's nice of you to finally notice that the War on Terror has been around for just a bit longer than since 2001.....

And another. It's not like this is a secret bit of history. This is current events.

What's with some of the recent posters? Wednesday it was "Who owns Iceland and and Greenland?" Today it's this.

Turn off GTA and pay attention the real world for a change, damn it!

Kinda sad, hey? And one would think, being a politics related forum, that the overwhelming majority of people would at least have a competent knowledge of history.

note that both of these questions are about things outside of the united states. most merkans have a rather fuzzy grasp on events inside the country. outside of it their mental maps just say 'beyonde heer thar be dragons'.

Who knows what happened in Munich in 1972?

I don't only know, but have been to the site, and dutifully put my pebble on top of the memorial stone. Do I win?

Time to make my excuses.

I didn't live through the event. I have never come across the subject through conversation. It's not a subject ever brought up in schools. I've never come across on TV.

I've also talked to a couple of people about it since posting and seeing your guys reaction. And... well... my generation seems to be drawing a blank, this includes the straight As kids, the Oxford students, and the Politics students.

I am being completely honest here. Really.

Actually, I don't even think so.
I have been rather baffled by some of the harsh responses here, too. Being German, I find it hard to get a perspective on how much this is supposed to be common knowledge in other countries, but I'm fairly certain that there are many similar events in other countries that I don't know about, and I'm a poli-sci major myself and don't consider myself exactly uninformed.

Live and learn, I say.

Er, well...i'm only 19...I know, this is worrying me. Especially since I'm on a politics degree, am considered to be fairly knowledgeable in the area by politicised friends and family.

I mean I could tell you about the IRA, ETA, Baader-Meinhof and Red Action. Especially Red Action as I was evacuated from my home because of them.

*shudders at the thought that I was living across the road from 22lbs of semtex.

Strange though it sounds, I can recommend the series The Rock'n'Roll Years as a very good grounding in those events of modern history that seem to get missed in a lot of other retrospectives.

I do think you win with the stone on the memorial. Though perhaps you have an unfair advantage there.

these forums, like anything else, is also a tool for learning. I didn't "Expect" anyone to know everything, but what no one saw was the fact that you did the research on your own and you 1) learned something, 2) admitted you didn't know.

good work and good job. :)

I'm with SoWiBi on this, pretty much word for word, even (imagine that! ;)).

I mean, it surprises me that the OP has never heard about it at all, but I doubt there are that many people who could come up with more than "Er, yeah, something to do with hostages? And, um, Israel?"

Also, it's not like his post was reeking of ignorance; basically, he was just being honest. Nothing wrong with that - I'm pretty sure even the bestest NSer draws a blank once in while (oooh, heresy! Burn the witch!:p ).

Also, people here on NS tend to be way better informed than their peers, IMO (well, exceptions abound, obviously :D ) so maybe this is not the best place to draw conclusions as to what constitutes "common knowledge".

As for that Iceland & Greenland thing, however, yeah, that was a shocker.

Er, well...i'm only 19...
 You're 19? Did I know that? *tries to remember* Damn, you sound older. You look older, too (in an entirely non-old looking way, of course :p).
