In Carnivorous Lickers "Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby" thread, I noticed we seem to have a number of Eagle Scouts here. I;m curious how many we have.

Eagle Scout of America since 1/28/02.

I think I lasted about five minutes through a meeting. I think what did me in was the little salute thing. I thought, "Yeah, I'm not doing that."

But then I went on to do marching band, so...

I know a disproportionate number of Eagle Scouts, though. In fact, no one I know who was in the scouts didn't make it to Eagle. They tell me it's rare...They're all pretty detatched from it now.

Yeah While I liked it at the time It was mostly a waste of time for me

But my family wanted me to do it so I did

I also ended up in marching band ... I found that a lot more valuable and has changed my life way more then Boy scouts

I don't know, I can't start a fire with my saxophone reeds...(but I can mark off a distance in multiples of five yards pretty accurately...and walk without moving my torso...)

Lol cub scouts was cool but it was later on that I just continued on with momentum rather then a wish to do so

And I know what you mean :)

I am also pretty good at walking backwards

Though I have nightmares of amplified meteronomes lol

Haha...we didn't have amplified meteronomes. There where some advantages to going to a small, poor school. We did have a drum line that would have to click things out, but it took about 20 seconds before it became an extended rim solo (about how long it's going to take for someone to comment on the term, "rim solo"...)

We dident even have a school :)

The district droped us in the 80's

We were compleatly fundraized we got no school nor public funding of any sort

Hell we had to rent the school gym from the district to use it for practice

But we managed ... we had some really nice parents that did a lot of work

But yeah the metronome was a training tool to start with for band camp (yes yes I have heard the horrible american pie joke)

I'm just complaining there. It was a bad joke. :p

The other Scouting organizations don't translate well, I've tried. Rank advancement isn't really a concern with the "Sea Scouts" of Finland (which is the Boy Scouts).

Do we really have to bring this up... I gotta fight off the 'geek' image enough without digging up shit from the 70's...

Next you'll want to know about my time in 4H and my stint in the FFA...

I made first class, went it to jambo, and saw a very, very, widespred homophobic additude to the core or the program. That when I decided that I was going to drop out. I couldn't stand to be a part of that.

Not saying that christianity makes you homophobic, but you're more likely to encounter that from them I'd guess.

Nobody really minds. You need to be funny-cynical though, which I'm sure you are (you seem to be on here).

You can give it a shot. No harm in that.

I was a life, and almost got my eagle, I was one merit badge, and a project away, but due to a family situation I had to move, and my school work took priority. So I didn't make it. I noticed some of you talking about marching band, well, I can be more impressive, I'm on an exibition drill team. We throw M-1's around and all that crazy stuff.

I see a lot of people here seem to have skipped scouting for Marching band.

I did both, it wasn't easy, 6:00 morning practice, afternoon practice till 6:30, Meating at 7:00, somewhere in there need huge number of Carbs to stay alive.

I was however the best scout in my troop at orienteering, I could mark off a distance like nobodies business.

Actually just made eagle last month:)

Talking about Homophobia in the BSA:

My troop actually had a stereotypically homosexual in it for a few months, We were okay with it, but of course we were all from Austin and knew (still know) people more flaming than he ever was.

Why doesn't any BSA leader back home know about this? (don't answer that)

Unfortunately, there are no troops in Finland. The closest are Norway and Denmark.
There's a district in Helsinki, but no troop.

There's a district in Helsinki, but no troop.Hm... Maybe TAC's reputation is worse than I thought...
Anyway, your only real hope is lone scouting then. And summer camps. There will be plenty of scouters there to fill in for Boards of Review and whatnot.

Thanks dude, but I'll just aim for the 1-year-cramfest that I've been planning on anyhow. If I can learn a language in a little less than a year, I get the remaining requirements for Eagle back home no problemo. I've been trying to get badges via e-mail, but none of the counselors really take the "...a Scout is trustworthy..." thing seriously.

I was a boy-scout (In Sweden we just call it Scouts however, no freckn egls!!!), and we don't have any real ranks.

I hated it, wasn't fun at all. Well except this one time on a sailing, where the only two hot chicks on the trip decided to sun-bathe...now that was one moment in history I really enjoyed, There were sooo much I just had to do on deck then... :D

I only did it to get my parents to ease off my case regarding hobbies...which I had no really acceptable ones...(Hanging out with friends and doing some community-destruction apparently doesn't count  j/k) I mean, who the hell chooses to be a boyscout anyhow?

Never joined the Scouts, but a friend of mine once said,

"I was in Boy Scouts. It wasnt until later in life I realised my scout troop was largely comprised of homosexuals."

Nope. There's two problems here.

1) It's religious, not christian. Otherwise they wouldn't have religious emblems (which are not given by the BSA, but by the particular religion) for Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Baha'i, Hindu, and Zoroastrian scouts.
http://www.usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/religious.html

2) This is the national organisation's policy, and it is not respected by all members (or former members - including Eagles, such as myself) of the organisation.

Palms?

Christ it's been 30 years... did they add something new or did the all the acid I dropped in the eighties wipe that aspect from my mind....?

Must have been the acid. Palms have been awarded since 1927.

I chose to be a scout, and I'm glad I did. I'm the only one in my family that can start a fire with nothing more than pine needles and flint! :D

I wish we'd had cooler uniforms though. I'll admit the BSA uniforms are kinda gay, and I dunno, they need comando uniforms!

Add on another Eagle- no palms tho- managed to slip by a few days before my eighteenth. It seems everywhere I go tho I run into more Eagles- I think the "rarity" percentage is based highly on those kids who went to a meeting and didn't make it past "the salute"- they are included in the numbers even tho they might say they were never in scouts.

Where did you learn how to shoot? Boy Scouts, sir. :sniper:

I stopped after cubs because my family moved, and I never found a troop in my area (kinda didn't look either)

I would have quit somewhere between the religious issue or the "we don't like gays" issue anyway.
