Online shopping

I have ordered a few things online, but in the back of my mind I'm always afraid of giving out the credit card info and/or other personal information. Do you think its safe to buy things online? Have you ever had any bad experiences with it?

Also what kinds of things do you buy online?

poll coming...

one bad experience in that i bought a dvd from a band's website and they never shipped it... or responded to my bitchings.

but generally shopping online is fine as long as you stick to reputable stores, ensure that there's "httpS" in the url when you give over your card details, and only use sites which have proper bank-verified ecommerce.

it seems to be something of a generational thing: i grew up ordering things online... by the time i was old enough to have a debit card, there were things online i wanted to buy and online stores were just beginning to come into their own. but for my parents, for example, they simply hate the idea of their private information being transmitted over the net. i couldn't care less because a million and one spam companies have already attained reams of info on me and my buying habits, so what's the point in guarding it any more?

i tend to buy cds, dvds, games, books, sometimes clothes, electronic stuff, computer stuff, musical stuff, posters, and, recently, flowers.

its that little 'one-click' ordering button on amazon that does it... its evil! you see something you like and you think "ooh one click... i'll have that" and before you know it you've spent your life savings on absolute crap!
i had to turn off the button on my account :(

I just re-ordered some checks online for the first time, so I guess giving all that info out made me nervous. I used to browse E-bay but their stuff ends up not being a bargain after the ridiculous shipping costs.

As I couldnt resist making it an option. With a boring thread like this, you have to make the poll kinda funny. My threads never last. I think because I never make one about politics, religion or homosexuality. Oh well....

I'm kinda glad I don't have a credit card - if I did, I would be waaaayyyy too likely to buy out thinkgeek.com's entire inventory.

Anyway, internet shopping is excellent for items that are a bit unconventional and hard to find.

How does all this identity theft stuff go on? People dumpster diving? I read where its safer to shop online that in a store as far as security goes.

For the most part I have found it safe. I had one bad experience with a seller in Hong Kong on Ebay, who never sent my merchandise, and never responded. But one out of, say, about a hundred online transactions I have made isn't bad.

There are plenty of reputable places -- Amazon, for instance -- that will let you put things into your "shopping cart" then call them on the phone to finish the transaction, if you're afraid of trojans leaking your card info.

I remember when we bought plane tickets online, the next credit card bill came back with mysterious charges to Khols in California.

It hasn't helped me out in my quest at all. Of course, I am looking for a CD that was originally made in South Carolina, and there were only 2000 made. And I don't know the album name, just the band.

name of the band?

Sourwood Honey. They only made two CD's...the second one is called something weird like Oxydendrum Something, and has a bee on the jacket. That's not the one I want. I want the first album, with a hound dog on it. If you can find it, you'll make my day. I'll pay premo for it.

I have had great luck

I watch where I shop

On top of that major credit cards have major theft and fraud programs. All you have to do is give them a call ... and let them know that such and such charges were not yours

Its all good

Don't give a damn about that one. Saw them in concert in Columbia after they released the first album. Amazing. Kindof a Charlie Daniels/Dave Matthews hybrid. They got cocky, thought they were going to make it big- decided to "change their sound". Then, they released #2, that Oxydendrum crap. Sounded like that William Hung guy from American Idol singing along to a badly tuned banjo. Not popular anymore. At all. Fans disappear. Band breaks up. They were forced to eat Robin's minstrels. And there was much rejoicing.

Hell, I'm on here every day. I got time. Thanks man.
