I think M J of course off the top of my head. Kobe could possibly make a run for it. It's a tough question. I think there are an elite group that stands above the rest. It is difficult to really pinpoint who is "the greatest".

*slowly shakes head* you have no one from the detroit pistons..... yes i know counting the entire history of teh NBA, the pistons new successfulness is still very short, but you can bet on teh fact the next legendary player will be from us.

Hell yeah, i really agree with you on that, he is one of my favorite players on the pistons. And he played really damn well last nite against the bucks.

How the hell is Shaq on there? The man has trouble making shots that are further away than arms length, and he's really not all that athletic. I understand that he's dragging a lot of meat around, but the only reason he's had success is because he's a freakin huge guy, and if 300+ lbs of meat like that is coming your way you can either move or get crushed.
How I loved watching the Lakers get destroyed in the 2004 Finals.

Second. Shaq is famous, way too famous, but he is not the greatest NBA player in history, nor even among them.

I voted Air Jordan of course.
Rick Barry i like his son more.http://67.18.37.14/html/emoticons/laugh.gif
If Air Bud had played in the NBA this poll would have been a hell of a lot different.

Oscar Robertson once averaged a triple double for a season. You can't have a discussion of this type without at least mentioning him.

I think it's a toss-up, between John Paxon and Will Perdue.. with Michael Jordan a close third.

Everyone here is either forgetting about, or never knew about the existance of, George Mikan (http://www.hoophall.com/halloffamers/Mikan.htm).
He's the reason the shot clock exists, as well as the three second rule. He's also the reason the key is six feet wide instead of three. This guy only missed two games during his entire career, and that was because of a broken leg, which he later played through. He's personally responsible for many of the things we take for granted in the game today.
I don't it's possible to say there's an individual best player in NBA history.
Some more names to throw out there:
Earvin "Magic" Johnson
The Logo Jerry West
Dixie Thunder

How about, greatest NBA player to have never won a championship ring?
John Stockton
Karl Malone
Charles Barkley
Pistol Pete
all viable options... anyone I am forgetting?
