I grew up in Fairfield...you're in Northern California, right?

Just curious, have you ever seen an Arco on the entrance to a freeway? I still remember that oddly-placed gas station.

Anyway, I feel your pain. Suck it up. I'm 15, in a school of 4,200 kids, and the closest thing I've ever gotten to a good debate was:
"Gays should all be executed."
"No they shouldn't."

Surely it'll get better once we get to college. Let's hope it does. It's not like the older generation looks any better.

Sometimes I think it can be true: we are the ultimate product of the environments in which we grow. They certainly have influence on who we become in life. However, I think how we turn out really depends on the choices we make in situations. I could have screwed myself over so many times, but somehow I keep ending up on top. Granted, I live paycheck to paycheck- but I'm living, I like my job, my car gets me to work (most of the time), and I have internet. It could be MUCH worse... always keep that in mind. Somebody out there is always worse off than you.

And for the record- I turn 23 this year, but anyone who knows me will say I'm 23 going on 40...

I resent that. I mean sure, I've watch some of the specials on History channel when it catches me, but Cartoon Network is awesome, it was moreso before, when you could regularly catch Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes (Ah, the classics ^_^ You'd be suprised how many kids wouldn't get "Sufferin' Sucotashes" [eesh, spelling]) But it's still great, who say you can't be intelligent and enjoy kid stuff?
Disney channel....Eh, not so much, every series on there does the same episode storylines, and a majority have the main character, one male freind, and one female friend. Look at them, serously.
Then Nickoloedeon, it's doing fine, had to add in the acursed Teenick, Bah! I miss seeing Catdog, luckily, with cable, comes Nicktoons, got some of the good ones there, Rocko's Modern Life, Invader Zim etc.

No, the majority of Generalites hav, in my experience, all been either in Secondary School or Uni. There are a few post-grad regulars under 30 and a handful over 35, with a couple of Geezers like Eut.

Couple that with the number of European an Ausi/NZ posters and you get a pretty good indication why General leans the way it does. ;)

Well, Washington was the first official POTUS, whoever may or may not have been exercising the power at times is a different matter ;)

23, but I feel older because I'm a second year university student. I was a bit creeped out when some of the kids in my French class told me they were 17.

Although I really felt old when I got a new soldier when I was in Iraq in November '03. He told me he'd graduated in June of '03, and we'd already been in Iraq in April of '03. I just couldn't get over the fact that he'd been in high school when we'd deployed.

This seems to surprise a lot of people on the internet, but I'm only twenty-one, as of about two weeks ago [the 14th]. Generally, people seem to think that because I know a lot of big words, use punctuation, and capitalize when necessary that I'm a lot older than I actually am. In an AIM conversation once about eight years ago (!) I was mistaken for a 26 year old, which was amusing to me at the time as that was exactly twice my age.

I'm going in with my stepfather (don't ask) and I get carded at the door. I pull out my license and the doorman stares at it for a few seconds. Finally, he goes, "you do NOT look your age!"

I asked him, "how old did you think I was?"

His response: "I thought you were pushing 20."

Since it was a gay strip club, my response was, "I could kiss you."

Hey, I read some of your messages and I just want to tell you there is still hope! I study at the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Bucharest (by the way I'm 19) and I am surrounded by people who, while they have preoccupations normal for our age - music, films etc, are also concerned about more serious issues. I'm sure that when you get to college, things will change, since you will be in an environment more suitable and adequate to your personality. So keep up the good work and goodluck with your state! Math: A
English: A
Double Science (Chem and Physics): B/A (The A was close to being a B, Glad I never got B/B)
Art: B
Geography: B
History: B
Music: C
German: C
Japanese: D (I did this in a seperate establishment, a Public College)
RE: G (Just avoided a U)
In my school you need atleast 5 Subjects above C to do 4 A-levels or more of your choice, I do 4 A-levels, Math, English, Chemistry and Geography. Uh, so far two A's in Math/English, a B for Chem, and a C for Geog.. I plan not to go to Uni.
Education has already angered me enough.

Well, I used to be the youngest everywhere (school, friends, IRC channels, work, ...), so I'm always feeling a bit weird when so many are younger than me... ha, nostalgy ;)

Anyway, congrats to the "youngster" who learn, speak and discuss about politics. Politics is widely under considered by young people, and that's very sad because it shapes their future...

I understand the feeling of the "youngsters" who can't speak politics with their school comrades, I was in the same situation too ;) (I was the weird one, speaking about politics with the teachers, or wearing political clothes, ... :p). But don't desperate, and keep going ! :)

And you smart kids, don't be so condescending. Just cuz you know more about history doesnt necessarily make you better than your classmates. I'm willing to bet they know more than you in other subjects. Worry about yourself instead of your classmates, and learn as much as you can.

Also, yeah, I'm not the Englishy-type historian whatever, I do well in maths and what I see as reasonable in Chemistry. I know many people who got a U in the last Chem test on chains. I was one of 6 people to get above an E, and one of one person to get above a C. :) (In my class, not the country, for those mis-informed americans who think we're just another european backwards-culture)

My results may seem crap now because of this Egotistic.. evil, but remember to take into account, I'm dyslexic. If I didn't have dyslexia, I'd probably get results closer to his. Also, my school was crap and didn't provide some of the subjects he did that I didn't. I just want A Job, A modest House, no children, and an Asian slave to do the housework. Oh, and a monkey!

Your results are certainly not crap - I'm dyslexic also and it really hinders you! Even the time to get things done is tripled from processing difficulties - you did really well given the odds against you!

I know, but there are us and, there are the ignorant. Those who state Dyslexia isn't an excuse to have - what they would see - as Mediocre Grades just because they got loads of A*'s without studying. I'm also suspected of some ADHD type problems, explaining my lack of concentratonability (if that'd be a word, if it isn't.... I CLAIM IT IN THE DICTIONARY OF PRUSSIATOPIAN ENGLISH).

I'm happy with those Mediocre Grades if that's how they see them. They'd just try to discriminate on the premise of making themselves feel good by extracting "goodness" from the person being discriminated. It's typical of human nature. I make fun of all those who got a U in my Chem class.. They make fun of the CHAV's who couldn't make it into sixth-form, who make fun of mentally incapable people on some rehabilitation program for not making it in society... the chain would stop there unless they have an undiscovered ability of being able to communicate with germs. I'm suprised you even wanted to go to Uni btw, well done.

I have my doubts about the limitations of the dyslexic people at my school (with a few exceptions.)
For every 10 who claim extra time for exams at my school, I reckon only 1 needs it. Especially when they get to use a laptop.

Im multi-talented. I'm good at maths, abled at science (when talking about A level, its a damn sight harder than GCSE), good at some aspects of English (creative writing primarily), good at history (although I dropped it) blah blah.

Thanks, though it is hard... I'm suffering the lack of concentration right now! Although the EU economic business isn't the most riveting of topics! I agree about the discrimination... I tend to focus my discrimination on people who are stupid enough to heavily start smoking marijuana the term before GCSEs, though...! A surprising number of people actually do that!

Get the popular kid to get the team jacket for the annoying cousin... dysgraphia and dyslexia have so many similarities, and the boundaries are really blurred, especially since dyslexia can be wildly limited to either reading, or writing, etc...

I rejected the offer of a laptop to me, I saw it as discrimination towards dyslexia, so I'm happy with the good old hand, however crappy my handwriting appears. All those subjects in the GCSE years actually helped my handwriting slightly. You neurotypical people take such things for granted.

I urged a couple (actually, nearly all of them in the school) of my dyslexic friends to reject their laptops aswell, I explained to them it was a form of discrimination - the only reason they feel we need laptops is because, in their mind, we were 'infereor'. They rejected them. This was the happiest movement I've ever caused in my educational history.

And Prussiatopia: I used a laptop in my GCSE English and History exams (I'm dyspraxic not dyslexic, so it's not quite the same) And frankly, I don't care if its discrimination. I will use whatever is availibe withing the rules to get the best grades I can.

And it worked, 'cos I came out with an A and an A* :D

Well I took the laptop. Admittedly it was not because of dyslexia that I got it, it was some writing difficulties that were holding me back. I also took their extra time for ADD and poor short term memory. I'm not proud, if it is what I need to do as well as I should then fine. It doesn't really solve the problem, but the school can't help that, I just learn differently. It means that in class I chat with the teacher about stuff at uni level, then in the exams get a B. So I'll take they're time and laptop, cos it's all I'm gonna get.

One thing, they don't give you laptops because your inferior, they give you them cos they think your better than you show. Doesn't mean what you show is at all bad, but they want the best from you.

Well, at any rate

GCSE:
Math: A
English: A (Lit. B, Lang: A*, but it was quite bare.)
Double Science (Chem and Physics): B/A (The A was close to being a B, Glad I never got B/B)
Art: B
Geography: B
History: B
Music: C
German: C
Japanese: D (I did this in a seperate establishment, a Public College)
RE: G (Just avoided a U)

A-Level so far:
English: A (just managed to scrap it barely with lots of revision/studying so far)
Math: A (with very little revision/studying)
Chem: B (unfortuneately I DO work hard there)
Geog: C (because of pure lack of interest, if I did put the work in I'd scrap an A or get a B no problemo)

All without a laptop, with dyslexia and ADD, and I'm changing my mind about Uni, sure I'll never make it to Cambridge or Oxford, but any standard-rate University will do, I'm most likely going to be doing a degree in either Math or Chemistry.

Another thing.. what about re-sitting GCSE Japanese? Could be worth shooting for a C, I might want to do an A-Level later on if they do that.

Ritlina- World War ii began long before the battle in Europe. Japan's invasion of Manchuria and the disputes around the Pacific were pre Nazi/ally aggression. So, you may think you are the only one to know when the war began, but in fact you are just as ignorant as the rest-if not more. You are only regurgitating what your state curriculum wants you to learn-that's not education, it's allowing yourself to be brainwashed, open your eyes and read some non- Euro/US centric accounts of history!
