what if you took an IQ test, and due to recent changes in the scoring, you found out that you are now "Slow". The test is confidential, meaning no one but you knows what the results are. You take the test again and the score is the same.

The Group behind the tests are willing to pay you $500 to allow them to publish the test results, but untill then, even the programmers don't know, and yes, there is no fault within the program. others have challanged the results but the scoring does hold up to scrutiny.

What will you do?
Will you allow your score to be published?
Will you keep it a secret from everyone?
Would you tell anyone and who would you tell?
How do you think your life would change?
Would you fight to have the "Bar" lowered to reflect your old scoring?

I'd try it yet again, this time while not stoned/drunk. And then I would pass with flying colours, because i'm smarter than everyone else anyway. (lol. kidding :p)

To me IQ tests are meaningless. There are factors which can throw the measurement off, and IQ isn't something diffinitive, It doesn't mean that you can only reach a certain intelligence and no more. Like any muscle, if you excersise your brain, your intelligence will grow. You can grow your IQ if you are determined enough.

i wouldn't be much surprised... my IQ score has been going down all my life anyway :p

i don't really see any problems publishing the results though: a) i get money, and b) the people who know me, know me as i am and i should doubt some new number on some test would change any of my relationships or the way we interact.

Eh, okay. I've never made much of a show to present myself as extremely bright to the general public. The people that know me well will think the test was bogus, and those that don't wouldn't care or wouldn't be excessively surprised.

Actually IQ is pretty much set from birth. To abilty to process and absorb information is painfully a pretty set factor. I believe from the age of infancy to adulthood IQ tends to be lowered or raised with a maximum of 10 points.

I would however support the point that IQ is far from the only factor deciding your succes in life. To abilty to achieve a high score in such a test is largely based upon your logical skills which mostly means an exellent mastery of maths will get you very far. This isn't really dishonoust in the sense that logical intelligence is one of the few objective measurements of intelligence.

Umm...thats not how actual IQ tests work. A real battery of tests (such as the Wechlser or Stanford-Binet) isn't like some quick internet IQ test, its is literally hours (8+ for a full battery is not uncommon) of sitting with a clinician doing measure after measure after measure. The tests themselves are both quite reliable (meaning that if you take the test several times your scores are very likely to be within a standard deviation of eachother) and quite valid (they accurately test general knowledge and educational attainment in relation to others).

As for changes in "scoring" even if the criteria for determining mental retardation were changed, it is unlikely that you would suddenly find yourself being retarded. The most mild clinically defined form of mental retardation has a cutoff point of approximately 70 (it is kept fuzzy specifically because someone with a score on the borderline might still be fully functional). 70 is a very low score, representing the mental ability of a sixth grader in an adult. At this point, your life isn't really going to "change." You had the limitations before you ever had a diagnosis, all the label really means is that you have the option of seeking support services.

Not really. Someone who has an IQ low enough to be considered clinically retarded cannot excel beyond a certain point. There is an upper limit to their ability. The developmentally disabled aren't lazy, they don't lack determination, they just cannot go beyond a certain point. It is a sad thing to see because they are so determined. An IQ below 70 is generally not just a lack of education or effort, it is a sign of brain damage.

Real IQ tests are written and constantly updated by large groups of researchers, clinicians, and statisticians. They have been shown time and again by independant researchers to be both a very good indicator of current intellectual acheivement and a good predictor of future intellectual performance. Far from being meaningless, they are some of the most stringently maintained and tested measures on earth. Yes, certain facotrs can influence the results, but not that much and not over repeated testings.
