Miami-Dade officer shoots man in groin during traffic stop

MIAMI -- An investigation is under way after a Miami-Dade officer shot a man in the groin during a traffic stop Tuesday morning, news partner NBC 6 reported.

According to a police news release, officers were working with the Miami-Dade Police Department Robbery Interdiction Team in the area of Northwest 12th Street and Second Avenue when they witnessed what they believed to be a firearm given by a male on the street to the driver of a Nissan Altima.

The officers stopped the vehicle and asked the men inside to keep their hands in sight.

Police said the driver co-operated and kept his hands raised, but the passenger fumbled with something under the seat and then produced a shiny object they believed was a gun.

"The passenger kept making several attempts underneath the seat, kept refusing the officers' request," said Joey Giordano, of Miami-Dade police. "The officer saw him pull something out and the officer fired one shot, striking him in the groin."

The passenger, described as a Hispanic man in his 50s, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

Here's how I avoid cop related incidents:

1) Produce my passport and explain I'm not black. Pointing to the section reading "Race Group".
2) Discreetly begin recording with your mobile phone
3) Hide your oregano and rosemary

Sorry...

If the police have a reason to believe that you have a gun (which they most certainly did in this case), and you move your hands to your waist, you're going to get shot.

It only takes a second from the time your hands go to your waist and out of sight to the time the policeman may be shot, so they're ready for this.

Hands tell the story.

Additionally, the policeman is standing up and the driver is sitting. They're going to be firing down at an angle to the center of mass, and your groin is roughly where the gun is pointing.

Of course, that's why my "Car Carry" position is "Tanker Style" in a 5.11 Tactical Series jacket/vest. Muzzle is already level with the drivers-side door.

But then, I also carry my DL & Permit in the Right-side breast pocket so the Cop has full view of my hands from the minute they leave the steering wheel (only on his request).

It's too easy to hide lethal shit below the window for a cop to take chances.

Dude, the guy was reaching under his seat during a traffic stop. Everybody should know that's a great way to get shot. When stopped by the police it's just common sense to keep your hands where the cop can see them.

I'm not even a cop, and I carry concealed.

If I view the situation as an altercation, and I have reason to believe you're armed (let's say I've seen either a knife sheath or pistol holster, or the butt of a gun), if your hands move wrong, I'm going to shoot without warning.

Yep. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I just don't understand how anyone could be so stupid as to reach under his seat during a traffic stop. It's basically asking to be shot. Every time I've been pulled over and had a weapon (knives) in my possesion I've made sure to tell the cop and let him take and hold the weapon for the duration of the stop. I certainly don't go reaching for it.

Advice I got from a cop (and a few felons) over the years.

Stop the car, pull over with plenty of room for the cop on driver's side if possible.

Turn off the car. Turn on flashers.

Turn on interior light.

Roll down your window.

Place keys on the roof, along with license and registration (weather permitting). Otherwise, put on dashboard.

Place both hands on the wheel and don't move unless told to.

I've had positive experiences as a result.

Context, my friend.

If you tell me you're going to kill me, or I have reason to believe you're going to do violence to me, it's dangerous to do something stupid.

But, if we're at a party, and I know you, you can juggle knives all night long.

Just make sure you don't juggle guns - not because I'm afraid I'll be hurt - I'm afraid that you'll cause an accident.

In North Carolina, one of the things they emphasize in the mandated course you take before being granted a concealed carry permit is that you tell any officer who stops you that you are carrying. I have had that happen twice and both times the officer asked to see my concealed carry permit and also asked to see the weapon. Both of them liked my Sturm/Ruger 9mm. :D

Back in the day... oh about 1985 or so... I was in a competition down in Vegas? where we were competing against, among others, New Mexico Military Institute.

Their Commander (doing Saber work) caught a blade from a 4-way exchange arms (square of death). Opened him up about 1/4" deep along his left side from his hip to just below the armpit. Didn't drop the saber. He finished the (forshortened) routine and marched his troops off the feild before passing out.

Rock Hard that kid.

And 99% of people in the US don't carry guns either.

Of the 1% that do 99% of those aren't about to shoot a cop. Then again, they aren't as likely to get pulled over for violating other laws either....

1.71 people were killed as a result of a gun related crime (eg suicide, homicide) in 2001, per 100,000 people[1]. Against the 16.4 per 100,000 in the United States[2].

Australia has some of the world's strictest gun control laws. America has some of the world's most liberal gun control laws.
