NS Vietnam Vets! A little help, please. :)

For my writing class, we're dealing with some of the issues surrounding Vietnam and as part of my research I need to speak to some Veterans who served during that time. I've come up with some questions and wondered if the Vietnam Vets around here would like to answer them. Your answers may be quoted in the final paper (which I will be more than happy to give out copies).

Anyway, here we go:

1] What branch of service did you serve and what time period?

2] What was your primary job with the US Military?

3] Did you actively volunteer or were you drafted?

4] How many tours did you serve and where?

5] Did you see combat?

6] How do you feel about the draft and do you think it would work today?

7] Describe one event, preferrably personal, that sums up your feelings about about the war.

8] Many films have been made in the last 20 years concerning Vietnam such as Platoon, Go Tell the Spartans, and We Were Soldiers. How do you feel about these films and is there any one in particular you feel to be particularly honest in its representation?

9] How did you feel about the anti-war protests back then and has your opinion changed?

10] Many people compare our current conflict with the Vietnam conflict based on the lack of official declaration, alleged coverups, and a divisive White House. Do you feel this is a fair comparison? Why or why not?

Remeber: You do not have to be objective. I want personal views, not political ones.

Part of all of this is an analytical comparative essay between the "Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America" and the "Declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam".

I always loved the last bit of ours:

"We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

Gives me goose bumps.

Speaking of bumps ... BUMP! Surely there's a Vietnam Vet or two around here willing to give it a go. :p
