DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - The U.S. Navy boarded an apparent pirate ship in the Indian Ocean and detained 26 men for questioning, the Navy said Sunday.

The 16 Indians and 10 Somali men were aboard a traditional dhow that was chased and seized Saturday by the U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill, said Lt. Leslie Hull-Ryde of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain.
A big BZ to the USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) on this one. The pirates should've realized you just can't outrun a Flight IIA Areight Burke class DDG. They did stop though when warning shots were fired. I guess they didn't want to see how big of a hole the 5" deck gun would make.

Pirate ships aren't armed like they used to be. They used to be able to duel frigates in the age of sail, but they are still a threat to unarmed cruise ships and merchies, thus the reason the Navy goes after them.

Good for them, Beer's all around.

Ship to ship it was no contest, but being one of the sailors or marines riding over in a boat as part of the boarding party, that would have made me a bit nervous I think, searching the captured ship and wondering if anyone was going to try something (hold outs or booby traps) I don't have any particular reason to think that pirates would surrender just because their 'captain' tells them to.

A big "Well Done."

EDIT: that picture in the post above is not the ship talked about, although that is the type of boat that is used to get the priates to a ship to be captured in the first place...

Actually, the picture I posted is one of the "pirates" who tried to take on a Cruise Ship back in November 2005 and is more representative of the class.

The Capitan outran them. :p
