I believe Guantanamo Bay was the result of a lease agreement signed between the U.S. and Cuba before the Communist Revolution.

The answers are
A: Grudge-bearing and the unwillingness to say a previous president was wrong, and
B: Lots of guns.

My guess is posturing. Both China and CUba attained their current government in bloody revolutions. But China is bigger and has more to offer than good cigars.

Because China has a huge population and thus represents a huge potential market with the ability to create huge economic gain. Through American history, territorial expansionism and industrialization brought by war (especially the Civil War and WWII) created extremely productive economic booms. All those new products need to be sold somewhere, or the economy becomes oversupplied, prices plummet, and you get recession. There is a reason why the United States wanted to move into the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, as well as Japan after WWII.

Indeed I believe it was in 1903 or 1904 when we were establishing banana republics. I think it was a 99-year lease, but it might have been longer or indefinite.

China is cooler than Cuba.

Part A is right on the money. Nobody is allowed to disparage the "great" JFK. (Personally I think he was a womanizing asshole).

Part B is wrong. Cuba is not a threat to the US. Nixon (another asshole) sold the US out to China to make a few bucks.

Part B was directed at the idea of Cuba possibly trying to get rid of the Guantanamo presence, but yeah, I wonder if any president in the last fifty years gave any real thought to how things would be ten years after he was out of office.

Nixon went to Mao's China, but he didn't really do anything.

It was only after Deng Xiaoping completely changed the place that trade started. Maybe the US would do the same thing if some sort of pragmatist reformer would follow Castro in Cuba.
...
Yeah, fat chance.

There are lots of Cuban votes in Florida and you need Florida to be president.

Guantanimo came as part of the Spanish American War in which the US took Cuba and the Philippines away from Spain.

1)Because China produces all the things that the US loves to consume so much. China drives the US economy

2) As a result of this, the US-and-US-companies now owe trillions of dollars to China-and-Chinese-companies

As I understand it, Guantanamo was under a long-term lease ( 100 years?? ) and Castro would have been unable to break it and didn't want to attempt force to retake it.

The differences between the US and Castro date originally from a misunderstanding. Seems Fidel paid an unannounced visit to the US and asked to meet with President Eisenhower. Eisenhower's VP at the time, Richard Nixon, told Eisenhower that Castro was communist-leaning and could be safely ignored. Castro took affront and things have gone downhill ever since.

Interestingly enough, it was the same man, Richard Nixon, who as President, made the initial overtures to normalize relations with China.
