I'm related to a famous Scot as well (in America, anyway). Allan Pinkerton, one of the instrumental tacticians of the Civil War, and founder of the Pinkerton Security Agency, (in)famous for the Homestead Strike incident.

I'm also related to Clint Eastwood (he's technically a cousin), which is pretty cool.

Go back far enough and you'll probably find a famous person in most family trees.

Apparently something like 1 in every 200 people alive today is related to Gengis Khan.

Not me though - my uncle researched my family tree and on my fathers side it's nothing but Scottish labourers, along with a few blacksmiths.

I am directly related (cousin) to the former drummer/songwriter of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Jerry Allison. Never met the guy.

I have a cousin who played in the band Paul Revere and the Raiders and was the lead guitar for Sonny and Cher and then later, just for Cher. I'm sure you've heard of him, Keith Allison.

Keith's wife Judith was the head writer for one of the greatest TV shows EVER-"Blossom".

Well, more recently, there's been this blight upon the American culture we all knew (and some loved) as....Hanson. Yeah, the Mmmbop kids. Some sort of distant-ish cousins, HOPEFULLY several times removed....I've never even met them, so no threat that I'll ever have to, God willing.

But more importantly, I've got John Hanson, who's technically the first President of America (first man to serve a full term as President of the Continental Congress....semantics go a long way in this world). Then on my dad's side, I've got the McCarty line (who founded lots of small towns in my area and was one of the two founding families of Conception Abbey), and Sgt. Pleasant Fountain (strange name) who's got several pieces of equipment and weaponry on display at Fort Scott, KS.

Nobody terribly major, unless you're a history fan. Or if you really like little boys with high voices.

Angus McDonald. Grandfather 7 generations back. He was a friend and Neighboor of George Washington. He is rumored to have been at the battle of Culloden and came to the colonies afterwards. He started a Mason lodge in Virgina, commanded forces in Lord Dunmores War. Being a stubbern Scot he actually refused a commision for GW because it would have placed him under somebody he thought did not belong in command(he was replaced) and GW and the Gov tried several times to talk him into it.

A cousin is Angus McDonald III. He started the 7th Virginia Cavalry and was on staff to Jefferson Davis.

There is a person in the line that would link us to the Kings of England and France but we can't prove or disprove the person's relation.

Just like those people "getting in touch with their former lives" - princesses, knights, heroes, and famous sages, every last one of them.

Just once I'd like to see someone get on TV and say "Ooh, I feel it! This is it! This is the exact spot where I used to herd goats for 16 hours every day until dying of an upset stomach at the ripe old age of 34." Just once.

Not true. It's just that there aren't very clear records on the family trees of village idiots and janitors. And even if there was, you wouldn't recognize their names and made the connection: "Sam Buttnickle. He was that moron that painted fences in Galveston Texas with his penis, wasn't he?"

Which is a real pity. Because I'm sure we all have penis artists in our family trees and they make for great stories.

Before the Union of Scotland and England, when the borders were still the outer marches, and governed by the warden system, my ancestors spent most of their time stealing. (Purportedly from the Scots, but more often than not from the English as well). So I am related to a bunch of petty career criminals. And not very good ones at that.

It's really about as close to village idiot as you can get.

My ancestor is a man by the name of Garcilaso de la Vega. He was a Spanish poet and soldier. He is considered one of the greatest Spanish writers ever. He also has an interesting military career. Back when the Ottoman Empire was at it's height and scratching at the walls of Vienna, Garcilaso was sent there by the order of Charles V (Holy Roman Emporer at the time) to help defend the city. He was injured in the battle of Tunisia and for his service was Knighted into the Order of Santiago. After the war, Garcilaso soon pissed off Charles V though when he tried to marry his nephew to one of the Empresses' maids of honor. He was imprisoned on an island on the Danube for many months until he was released. Eventually, Charles V forgave Garcilaso. And Garcilaso went to France to fight one more fight for Charles V. A war erupted there because the King of France decided to ally himself with the Ottoman empire. Garcilaso was killed in battle during a tower siege when an enemy rock fell on his head.
