By hockey North Americans always mean ice hockey. We call the other thing field hockey. I've never seen field hockey, or even heard of anyone playing it. However, up here in the frozen north we have a lot of ice hockey.

OK, let's examine that.

The football World Cup gets upwards of a billion viewers every four years.

During an F1 season, races get about 50 million viewers every two weeks.

In the UK, about a million people watch the Superbowl every year, whereas the average F1 race will get about 5 or 6 million every two weeks.

An F1 race gets in the top 5 in the world for viewing figures, and it's a far more regular occurance that the Superbowl. Even then, the Superbowl (worldwide) is beaten by the UEFA Champions League final.

According to ITV, worldwide the Superbowl gets about 100 million viewers, 98% of which are in North America.

The Champions League final last year got about 70 million viewers, but these were spread across the world.

The Canadian Grand Prix got over 50 million viewers, and again, it was watched across the world.

Source (http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=34780)

So, while the Superbowl might be hugely popular in North America, it is by no means the greatest watched sporting event around the world, as you have claimed. In fact, outside of the US, it doesn't even register as an event.
