Songs that relate to your life

Kanabia

I'm sure i'm not the only one....Say you'll listen to a song (or album), reflect on the lyrics and think "well damn. I feel just like that right now". In a couple of years time, you'll realise you haven't listened to it in ages, and when you do...it reminds you of that particular moment or point in your life. I have quite a few like that, but it's hard to explain most of them since they're personal reflections. I can think of one in particular, though. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter by Nirvana. Taken on its own, it might seem to be mostly meaningless gibberish, but way back when I first heard it, several lines stood out:

"I love you for what I am not, I do not want what I have got"
"What is what I need? What is wrong with me?"
"Hate, hate your enemies, Save, save your friends, Find, find your place, Speak, speak the truth"

At the time, it was a real reflection of what I was - I didn't know what I wanted out of life, all of the women I was attracted to I had no chance with, and I didn't know where i'd gone wrong. Then I listen to it now and realise that things might be changing a little...and what before was a real pessimistic and gloomy listen has become to me something that lets me feel like things might slowly come together.

And that little sleep-deprived rant aside,
because I know most people won't bother reading it anyway and just skip to the end to see wtf i'm on about, what songs have defined points in your life? Have they changed over time? Etc. Or do you just not get this attached to music?

At the minute I'm very attached to "I Thought I Knew It All" by Megadeth. Mostly because I thought I knew it all, and it turns out I was wrong but I reallt, really hope the incident in question happened for a reason. It's also because I listen to a lot of Megadeth.

In the past, I've felt a similar connection to Tomorrow's Dream by Black Sabbath and Ride Like The Wind by Saxon (most recently both at the same time, since they're both about getting away from where you are and starting over again). Tomorrow's Dream still has the connection for me to back then, although Ride Like The Wind doesn't, which is good because it means I can listen to it without getting pissed off.

"Don't Fear the Reaper" - Blue Oyster Cult: Its winter in Finland. Dark. Gloomy. Meh. "Season's don't fear the reaper, the sun, the wind, or the rain! We can be like they are, c'mon baby, don't fear the reaper, just take my haaaannd!" Just good feelings there.
"Sound of Silience" - Simon and Garfunkle: Really great any time. Anyhow, having a lot of communication problems just right now. "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listning, and words, of the prophets written on the subway wall, still remain, and the sound, of silience." People just going with the crowd, and not thinking for themselves. People just hearing you, activly listening, but not really getting to know you.
"Dom som forsvann" - Kent: Those that disappear. I need a vacation, and I feel my social life back home slowly slipping away. "Slowly through the room walks her out," bah, its better in Swedish!
"Toxicity" - System of a Down: "Eating seeds, as a past time activity..." Wow. I just got those lyrics just these last few months, I never really thought they were talking about genetic engineering and such. I'm trying to eat healthier, anyhows.
"Sommaren är kort" - Ledin: Well, for when summer is finally here. Its short. Its awesome. Live it up. Pretty much the message there. Just kinda keeping that in mind.

There's a lot better ones, but those are the one's I'm feeling right now.

"Desperado" -- Eagles (pretty much describes my persona)
"Superman" -- Five For Fighting (If you knew me IRL, you'd get it immediately)
"Against the Wind" -- Bob Seger (get more and more appropriate as I get older)
"Luka" -- Suzanne Vega (might as well have been written about my childhood)

had a weird thing once, I went through an "Everclear" stage when I was younger, about when Sparkle and Fade came out, and I would start the CD on the first track every night when I went to bed, then in the morning it would always be on track 3 when I got up and I would turn it off. I probably only really heard the first 5 tracks or so and then would fall asleep. One night I woke up in the middle of the night and it was on track 12. It was so weird because it really was about stuff that happened in my life, it creeped me out though some of the details were just weird, like the fact that as I was listening to it at 3am the glow in the dark stars on my celing were still kinda glowing, and were like pale green......anyway I still really like the song, but the first time I heard it, I got so creeped out by it that I still get goosebumps when I hear it......

kinda getting creeped out thinking about it:eek:

"Emotionless" by Good Charlotte:

Emotionless

Hey Dad I'm writing to you
Not to tell you, that I still hate you
Just to ask you how you feel
And how we fell apart how this fell apart

Are you happy out there in this great wide world?
Do you think about your sons?
Do you miss your little girl?
When you lay your head down how do you sleep at night?
Do you even wonder if we're all right?

We're alright
We're alright

It's been a long hard road without you by my side
Why weren't you there all the nights that we cried?
You broke my mother's heart, you broke your children for life
It's not OK but we're alright
I will remember the days you were a hero in my eyes
But those were just a long lost memory of mine
I spent so many years learning how to survive
Now I'm writing just to let you know that I'm still alive

The days I spent so cold, so hungry, were full of hate
I was so angry, the scars run deep inside this tattooed body
There's things I'll take to my grave, but I'm OK, I'm OK

It's been a long hard road without you by my side
Why weren't you there all the nights that we cried?
You broke my mother's heart, you broke your children for life
It's not OK but we're alright
I remember the days you were a hero in my eyes
But those were just a long lost memory of mine
Now I'm writing just to let you know that I'm still alive
I'm still alive
Sometimes I forgive, yeah and this time I'll admit
That I miss you, said I miss you

It's been a long hard road without you by my side
Why weren't you there all the nights that we cried?
You broke my mother's heart, you broke your children for life
It's not OK but we're alright
I remember the days you were a hero in my eyes
But those were just a long lost memory of mine
Now I'm writing just to let you know that I'm still alive

And sometimes I forgive, yeah and this time I'll admit
That I miss you, I miss you...hey Dad

'Only The Good Die Young' by Billy Joel. Especially the lines:

"You might've heard I run with a dangerous crowd. We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud. We might be laughing a bit too loud, but that never hurt no one."

and

"I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints. The sinners are much more fun."

'Amazing' by Aerosmith.

'My Sacrifice' by Creed.

You had to limit it to Swedophones, didn't you? *sigh* Some of these are old bands, some are not so old, some aren't bands at all, some do stuff in English, too, and they come in no particular order:

Well, there's Ebba Grön, Timbuktu (http://www.timbuk.nu), Håkan Hellström (http://www.mtve.com/article.php?ArticleId=6068), Laleh (http://www.laleh.se/) (she has Swedish material - I like her Storebror (http://mfile.akamai.com/9139/wma/stream.wmg.com/wmi/sweden/audio/laleh_storebror.wma)), Looptroop, Fattaru (http://www.fattaru.nu), Lars Winnerbäck (http://www.winnerback.net/), Doktor Kosmos (http://www.doktorkosmos.nu/), Cornelis Vreeswijk (http://www.cornelis.nu/)...

Really, I just keep thinking of people and bands that do stuff in English, like The Hives, Mando Diao, Marit Bergman (http://www.maritbergman.net/), The Soundtrack of Our Lives (http://www.tsool.net/), Sophie Zelmani (http://www.zelmani.com/)... I'm don't listen to many bands that do stuff in Swedish.

And So It Goes - Billy Joel lyrics (http://www.letssingit.com/?/billy-joel-and-so-it-goes-k5q7rgr.html)
Make Me Smile - Chicago lyrics (http://www.letssingit.com/?/chicago-make-me-smile-4xdtphc.html)

I Don't Believe You - Magnetic Fields lyrics (http://www.letssingit.com/?/magnetic-fields-i-dont-believe-you-5xgmhx9.html)

That's about it, really. But those are the ones that really kinda do it for me.

the whole of the album "Issues" by KoRn. summed up my time at uni.

particularly the lines of the last song that went "each day is the same, i just want to live again"

and then there's Papercut by Linkin Park, going on about paranoia and the voice in your head that brings you down. again, kinda summs up how i felt at uni (and still do to some extent, though i'm learning to shut that little voice out)

probably more, but... meh

I don't really have anything to contribute, guess I don't exactly have a "soundtrack of my life".
But you all got me to dig out my dusty Billy Joel LPs *feels old* and I'm listening to "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", which kind of is the soundtrack of a life in and of itself.

"Luka" -- Suzanne Vega (might as well have been written about my childhood)

Is writing about which song does not relate to your life considered off-topic?

Anyhow, I chose to re-name myself Lucca onve I had left my parents, and every single person I met so far keeps going "listen, I don't want to be insensitive, but does this have to do anything with that 'my name is Luca" song?". I very much like that song, but it is truly annoying when people start making up issues you don't have (fortunately).

On-topic, I'm not so sure..apart from hating to eveal things, I just have no one single song like that..but I'll go with Tocotronicfor fragments that I find to be fitting every now and again

So many so little time.

I suppose 'Only the strong survive' by Elvis- uplifting and makes me feel less shit about certain things

'My life' Billy Joel for the reason that it is my life and I'll live it how I like, always a good sentiment to carry you on

'Hotel California' the Eagles, not because I'm hooked on any drugs, but mainly because everyone at one point feels that they can check out anytime but never leave

others but I've a mental block at the moment

Whoa, I didn't think anyone remembered that song. Those were some seriously creepy lyrics very chirpily delivered. The fact that she "came home with a list of names" used to throw me, as did that one half-whispered verse about how "dry is good and wind is better" and "strike a match, go on and do it", coupled with the cover painting of this disquietingly cubist woman striking, well, a match and looking all calm and determined with those three eyes of hers.

But Time, Pink Floyd is really good (The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death), Master of Puppets by Metallica (feels like life's not going right direction), Melancholy by Iced Earth (cause i'm sad alot), Hallowed be Thy Name and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden.... because they are awesome
