I guess Iran is getting ready for the big time.

I also figure they learned their lesson the last time their assets were frozen in the US in the late 1970s - probably don't have any money in the US, but now there won't be any in Europe.

This is to be expected. They'd be stupid not to do it.

Yes, they were stupid in the late 1970s - not stupid now.

It looks like they're betting that the UN sanctions will go through, although I don't see that as likely unless Russia and China abstain.

don't see what Iran has to worry about as long big players like China and Russia are on its side it has nothing to worry about

never mind the whole debate about what there going to be sanctioned for

It's not likely, no, but better safe than sorry. It's hard to see what the UN would sanction them for - nothing in this matter they've done is against international law, per se. They are entitled to nuclear energy. They are entitled to pursue nuclear armaments, if they are doing that - still no evidence that they are, even though they should be.

China and Russia may be neutral. They might not want to vote yes on sanctions, but they might not veto either.

Abstaining is a possibility for both.

It looks like Iran doesn't want to take the chance.

wonder how much damage this move is going to do to Europe?

So far, it only seems to be foreign currency reserves. Hardly any, I'd imagine.

Very little. They're hardly Saudi Arabia or Qatar, after all.

Unless the US gives them access to equivalent energy sources..

I don't have any figures, but I think the vast majority of their foreign investment is in the US, not the EU. Eurosclerosis can have its good sides as well...

That's correct; one of the reasons for Iran's planned opening of a new Euro-denominated oil bourse in 2006 is because they have a lot of investment in the Euro, and the threat to the dollar would definitely prove to be a weapon against the US more than any crude nuke.
