A message from NationStates creator Max Barry

I appologise if this is the third or forth thread about this topic.

But I think this is pretty damn decent of Max.

I have JG, but (as a student) living in the UK I've not had the chance to get Syrup or the Company (yet).

I'm kind of torn whether to disable the ads or not.

On the one hand, I like the ad's and want to see the cool books available.
On the other, turning them off is a good way to show Max I care enough to buy the books.

So what was the point of this thread? To boost my post count. I mean seriously, I've been playing since '02 and my post count sucks!

But in all seriousness folks:

1) Are you gonna turn off the banner ad?
2) Have you brought the book?
3) Did you bother even to click the link and see what Max had to say, or are you just finding out now.
4) Have I been really slow and are there already 10+ topics about this feature that could have been introduced months ago for all I know?

1) Have done. I now feel all empty inside.
2) Damn right I have.
3) Of course I bothered to click the link. Max usually has interesting stuff to say.
4) Dunno. Probably!

No shit.... I only just noticed that one.

I've read both JG and Syrup but tbh.... I got both out from the library. I've honestly never spoted a Max Barry book in the shops, although while I admit I searched for JG a couple of times I probably never really searched very hard. Perhaps it's about time I shelled out and picked up a copy of company.

im leavin the ads. two main reasons, 1 i actually kind of like those ads, and 2 it seems like the only thing to do, he made the game (it's his ball and he can draw on it if he wants)

haven't bought the book, i've never seen it anywhere, ever.:(

i did read the message, it's the first thing of Max's i've ever actually read and i was struck by how cool he was about it and explaining what he meant.

this is the only topic i've seen on it, fair play.:)

I, also was torn about removing the ads. I never really considered them ads, since Max created the game to promote the book in the first place. I ended up doing so, just so I could stand up and be counted as one of those who bought JG and Syrup. ( I used a puppet nation to say I bought JG, while Syrup with this one) I am going to buy Company as soon as I can get to a bookstore, and I will have to make another puppet just so I can say I bought the book. Max's message did say that from time to time he would put up info if anything in the NS or MaxBarryWorld came up, so any future books will probably be mentioned.

I bought the book, so what the hell,; I have an ad-free browser, so, I'll keep it that way. :D

1) I'll leave the ads. I've even clicked a couple of times.
2) Yes, I bought the book even before joining the forum. I read the review in Asimov's and it was enough to intrigue me. I'm looking forward to reading Company.
3) I check Max's blog from time to time. He's funny. Has there been something else in the forum? It's been a pain trying to access this last couple of days, so I don't know if I missed something.
4) I don't know either. The board is flaky.

How are people meant to get in contact with publishers anyway? Is it just a process of mail, get rejected, repeat? Are you meant to copyright your work beforehand to prevent in transit stealing? Do you need a degree in Creative Writing to get noticed, or can you be any old person with a talent for storytelling?

My understanding is you should get an agent. To do this you have to write a letter with your idea and who it appeals to and blah blah. Then they will request like a chapter or something if they are interested and then maybe offer to promote it for you. If you are lucky enough to get this far than maybe if you are even luckier and your book will get picked up by an actual publisher. Then you just hope people buy it and it makes it into the right places so they can by it. I havn't tried this but it is what I've read as to how it works. I plan to try it when I finish my Bachelors. Sending anything to publishers means it goes in the trash most of the time (so I'm told). Also I've heard you shouldn't really write an entire novel until you get an agent to agree to back it up. Just have it planned out and write enough to show them you can write well and they should back you.

I firefoxed away the ad's some time back.

It'll be interesting to see the corralation between the amount of people who bought the books and the amount of people who just removed the ads.

I find it ironic that Max Barry, who is so anti-capitalism, needs you to buy his book, before you can remove the ads.

As for capitalism, I’m definitely pro- that. At least, I’m in favor of the kind of regulated capitalism that clearly beats the pants off any other economic system the world has come up with so far. Capitalism has its pointy bits, but it’s hard to argue with life-saving medicines, mobile phones, and being able to buy a vintage Chewbacca figurine over the internet. Now, I don’t think it’s a smart idea to privatize water, or the government, or any other essential service that isn’t subject to natural competition, but that doesn’t mean I’m anti-capitalist. That means I’m not a zealot.

Hmm...doesnt seem like the subtle warnings found in Jennifer Government, or most likely, Company.

But, for all I know...I could stand corrected.

2) Yes, I bought JG, haven't read it yet though (due to time constraints and a friend borrowing it)
3) Yes
4) I don't know, but it's probably the case

I think it's a great idea. Wouldn't work on much else than NationStates, though, where you actually have some decent people playing. Anywhere else, people would just say "Whatever" and click the thing.
I've read Syrup and JG, both excellent books, but I've gotten them both from the library. I have no immidiate plans to purchase Company, but it's on my Amazon wishlist and I'll read it as soon as it hits the library.

oh i hadnt noticed the message, thanks for bringing it to my attention

my copy of "company" came today. i cant rave about it yet as im only on page 14 but mr barry has a very readable style and it is showing great promise in these first few pages.

why are y'all waiting for it to fall into your arms at the bookstore? you will get a better deal buying it from amazon.com even if you do end up paying for shipping like i did. you dont even have to leave the house!

1) I did. I asked for it back.

2) I've purchased Company and Jennifer Government, though I've yet to actually read the first.

3) I read it.

4) Not that I know of. Of course, nobody's really been able to post for the past couple of days, so that might explain the lack of theads.
