Greatest Soul Song? w/ poll
The Nazz

So it's late and I'm feeling a little blue and there's not much debate going on--what else is there to do but start a thread where there will be a lot of posturing and lots of complaints about what's missing in the poll?
Best soul song, in your opinion--I'm tossing a handful of songs out there off the top of my head. Take the poll and argue your heads off. :D

And for the record, I wouldn't be able to make a choice, although when I'm hammered, I probably favor the Al Green, but only by a hair over Marvin Gaye.

Hmm. I'll go with Marvin.
Hmm, I gotta go opposite of Nazz on this one. Marvin Gaye, but only a hair over Al Green.:p

I can't say I blame you. I wouldn't feel bad about voting for any of them. There are days when I'm driving home down Federal Highway and drop a cd of those folks in and just wail with them.
With the windows up, of course. No need to humiliate myself orally as well as visually.:D

Those who give you funny looks, look funny themselves. Take time to give them a good laugh, it helps to point.:p

I'm going off poll...
Bill Withers - Use Me
When I hear "Respect" its still good, but when I see it in movies, comedy bits, trivia, ext. It gets old.

Hmmm, I'm intrigued.
Let's Get it On will get you laid. There is something to be said for that.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T means that no one should miss that in a spelling test, and is funky and important socially.
I'm a little stuck. Especially since I have no Sly and the Family Stone to pick from). I don't know that I can choose.

Go ahead and nominate your own--we have a write in for Bill Withers already.

I don't know that I could choose in general. I was coping out and you called my bluff. Maybe Stand or (I Wanna Take You) Higher or Everyday People or my favorite Don't Call Me ******, Whitey, but then I think we'd start quibbling over the line between funk and soul...
I'm going to go with Let's Get it On for the sex and that I have a free jazz saxophone quartet version of it that kinda kicks ass (as well as Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay). Free Jazz covers are almost as kick ass as ska covers.

You've clearly never heard the World Saxophone Quartet's version of Money, or Sex Mob's Macerana or You Only Live Twice.

What no Otis Redding? Still I had assumed this thread was going to be confusing modern pop like Mariah Carey with the real Stax and Atlantic stuff. So I was very pleased that it wasn't.

This is true. My opinion is biased, as I do love ska.. The Skatalites inparticular.
Does Nina Simone count as soul? If so, her song 'Baltimore' would top my earlier choice of Marivn Gaye.

A poll about soul music without "The hardest workin' man in show business, the godfather of soul" James Brown?! Heresy!

GUNS.....
of Navarone!
A-nyway...if we're allowing Nina Simone songs then her version of Feeling Good, which for some reason has found its way into a bunch of peoples playlists as of late, would get my vote. That song makes me want to strut in a sparkly gown and heels, and I'm a dude.
Wait, did I say that out loud?
(As an aside, Otis Redding should have been on this poll)
Anyway, my vote goes to the still relevant, still beautiful Marvin Gaye song, "What's Going On?"

Now, I may get smacked down for this, but I've always thought that this song was overrated.

Dude, how many times I gotta point this out-Marvin will get you laid. Hard to beat that.
Beats the hell out of Marvin.
Just curious, but what exactly are your reasons for making that statement?
One may not like Marvin Gaye's style or sound, but it is hard to deny him his place in the pantheon of great Soul singers. I'm not so sure Percy Sledge has earned that same honour.

How could you have a poll for best soul song and NOT have Isaac Hayes there? Shame on you!
'By the time I get to Phoenix' (extra long 20+ min version) def up there for great soul song.

He's also up there for funkiest song ever, namely the 'Theme from Shaft'.
Close second would be his 'In pursuit of the pimpmobile', which gets extra points for such a cool song title.

Let's also not forget his work on "South Park". (and I'm being serious, it's very funny stuff)

Indeed. Who can forget his chocolate salty balls?

 Yeah, the music gets you laid.
I never listened to alot of Sledge, but I did Marvin Gaye. In respect to those two songs I like Sledge better.

This might be an opportune to ask if there has ever been a good "South Park" themed thread?
