i attempted to post this earlier, but the server quite on me

so here it is,

from a historychannel.com poll,

Should there be another national holiday for a famous American?

If you answer yes, think of who you think is qualified enough to have a holiday in their honor

now this is NATIONAL holiday for the USA, just to clear it up so people dont argue something along the lines of "why should country x have a holiday for an American.

No: like what once happened in india, since they had such a long past, they had so many national holidays that hardly anything got done! If we're going to do it, it shouldn't be a no-work, no-school holiday, just a day dedicated to them, and that person should not be controvercial. i.e. not Reagan, nor FDR, and they should be dead ten years...like a stamp. Perhaps a humanitarian of some sort.

I'm another no vote. Here is why ... when national holidays hit my office (a government office) is dead the business day before and after as a number of our staff turns the holiday into an excuse to slack beyond the holiday itself. The best example: Thanksgiving ... the day before people leave a noon with tons of excuses and the Monday after (the State of California gives the Friday after as a holiday) people are still finding reasons for very low productivity.

This said, I'm not opposed to giving more vacation days (private or public sector), because as long as you have enough staff to carry out your business, the absence of one or two people shouldn't result in a complete stoppage.

I don't want people to be overworked, but I'd rather that the times that folks are away be staggered some. An example of a holiday that *nearly* turned into a disaster was over New Years Eve ... a ton of California engineers went away, and we got hit with a series of massive storms ... our flood operations groups didn't have people's emergency contact info (which I think is silly, as every government employee here files paperwork on next of kin -- which should be emergency info), and when the floods hit, we were protecting the state with skeleton crews. :(

There needs to be another holiday. But no political leader types. Nothing based on race. Absolutely nothing to do with religion/religious figures. We need something that screams "this is what America is about". Something innovative...I would have to say Edison's birthday.

John Wayne! Not for acting ability, but for a historical reference to what a man looked like before men became women and women became men.

A great thinker or something would be good. Or a legend of entertainment.

I'm going to miss being "deadly".

I think an intellectual, or scientist would be good. I am not so keen on the idea of an entertainer myself.

That is so funny, I just watched "Cahill" yesterday on AMC, and I was wondering when it became unfashionable to not be old and fat cause he rocked :D

Additionally, early in the movie, the bad guys having broken out of jail during a barn fire to rob a bank are back in jail and acting like they couldn't have done anything wrong, they say to Cahill (John Wayne) that they were fighting with his 17 year old son, and Cahill says to his son, looks like you were a bit over-matched (the other men being full grown and much bigger) and the bad guy says, it was a "friendly fight" and Cahill says, "I've never been in one of those." :p :D

I believe Reagan was by far amongst the best presidents this country has seen, along with the founders of the country, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Just so there is no confusion, I am not implying that the Bush family are the founders of our country, I am saying that the best presidents our country has seen are, the founders of our country, and Bush SR. and Bush JR. along with, of course, Ronald Reagon, all of which represent what America is about and the way we should and truly go about running our country.

Aaaarrrghh

I was waiting for some lame ass to throw out Ronnie Raygun! Christ on a pogo stick, he was only half there mentally for most of his second term, but that didn't matter because he was just a figure head anyways. He was an actor who's best role was that of a politician.

It doesn't make him the demigod that the neocons try to portrait him as...

and it certainly doesn't make him worthy of a holiday in his honor...

Ronnie took direction and read script.

How do you know that? You do realize that EVERY President has people surrounding him informing him of what going on and advising him right? Even Bill Clinton had that. Is Bill Clinton an actor too?

We need a holiday called "Mind Your Own Goddamn Business Day!" A 24 hour period in which everyone has the day off and is encouraged to stay at home and focus on matters in their own lives. Everyone contemplate the value of individiual privacy and self-satisfaction without concerning themselves beyond their own walls.

Because I'm trying to point out you cannot simply be an "actor" during a Presidency. Ronald Reagan was a real President whether you want to admit it or not, and I'm just curious why you called him an actor President.

Ronald Reagan was a real President whether you want to admit it or not, and I'm just curious why you called him an actor President. Most modern presidents are a figurehead for their party to an extent. Some more than others. Modern examples of the worst qualified humans to hold the office but having the right look or pedigree to get elected despite this and then proceed to fumble through with the proverbial 'man behind the curtain' actually running things are Reagan and Bush the second.

But I'll give Reagan this... he had better handlers and he didn't flub as many scenes.
