What should we do about a memorial to Zooke ( Sandy )?

There have been several suggestions about a memorial to Sandy ( better known on here as Zooke ), most of them having to do with charitable contributions.

In no particular order:

* Doctors Without Borders

* Ask Max if he'll name a character in one of his books after her.

* Donate to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( ASPCA ), or its equivalent in your own country.

* Donate to have a tree planted in the Holy Land.

* Catholic charities

* The Salvation Army

* Some sort of disaster relief

* Breast cancer research ( which is how Sandy's problems started )

* A group which assists the needy in developing countries.

* Christian Children's Fund

* The Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy foundation

If you have other suggestions, please post them in this thread so I can make up a poll. I think it would be a nice gesture if we could all agree ( for once! :D ) on a charity to which to donate. If you can't afford to send anything, don't fret about it. I'll make a large enough donation for all of us and sign it "Zooke's friends from Nation States" or something. :)

A noble gesture, Eutrusca. From the list you gave, I say ASPCA. Although I didn't really know Sandy, it sounds like animals were a big part of her life, and I think that would be fitting.

Eut. Set up an email address with a Paypal account that over the next X amount of weeks we can send donations to the ASPCA.

Once the time is up, send all moneys collected to that paypal account to the ASPCA. I'm reasonably sure we can trust you more than Abramoff. ;)

I've done the trees in Israel for her, but we all know her thing was animals. This would be easy enough to do. Make the donation in the name of NationStates Friends of Zooke.

It could work nicely.

Ah, my apologies, i have just spotted the thread at the top.

I don't know what to say, that's unexpected and saddening.

Hmm animal donations.

If people feel she had that much of an impact on the community, you could ask Max to use her handle as a character nickname in a book?

3DO once added a tomb of a special community member that died to one of their games.

both very good ideas

i still like the star one myself, but thats cos i'm a nerd. we all know that (as has been pointed out) sandy's thing was animals, so she'd probably prefer that

I also really like the star idea.
However, as I didn't know her or ever talked to her, from what I've read she would love the SPCA idea.. And in the end, that's the important thing here.

Is there any way that those of us without credit-cards would be able to donate?

I have to ask that as well. Nobody with a credit card will trust me to let me use theirs, even for this. So an alternative is needed.

could always post cash to eut or a trustable poster in europe? i could nominate myself for that if anyone else would trust me, that is :P (i should think fass and a few others (like cabra or glitziness) could also be tusted)
cash could then be banked and the amount transferred to the paypal account (or directly donated in her name again)

alternatively, cheques, wire transfers, things like that are options

Just my two-cents worth here as a (mostly) lurker on this board....

The Star Registry thing is a racket. It doesn't have any authority anywhere to name stars, it just keeps its own list as a profit-making venture.

The sole purpose of using the International Star Registry is as a novelty gift. You get a certificate. That's it.

I would recommend choosing a memorial which would mean something to your friend and have a positive impact on something she cared about.

I'd say a donation to the Cancer Research Society. It might be too late for Sandy, but we can put some money towards helping others with breast cancer.

Either this:

* Donate to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( ASPCA ), or its equivalent in your own country.

or this, since her husband seemed to like the idea:

* The Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy foundation

Whatever everyone thinks, though; most of the suggestions are very worthy.

Well, in the original thread, someone (Fass, I think) brought up the idea that everybody could just donate to their country's equivalent of the ASPCA, as to make the donation process easier for non-Americans. Everybody thought that was a good idea, so I guess it still stands.

Then again, Zooke's husband said in a later post that this: * The Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy foundation would have been the cause closest to Zooke's heart at this time, seeing as how The Nazz' little nephew just died of that disease.

He also mentioned that, while he thought the star-naming was a sweet idea, Zooke would much have preferred any money donated in her name going towards a tangible cause, seeing how she seems to have spent her own life helping out so many of worthy causes.

So, personally, I think we should try to stay as close to what Zooke would have liked most, the Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy foundation. For those abroad without credit cards, I'm sure there's either an equivalent of that group in your country, or you could still go ahead and donate to your local SPCA - I don't think there's any reason why any money shouldn't go to several causes/organizations.

Just my 2 cents worth.:)

I didn't realize you didn't know, Corneliu. I'm so sorry. You should read the sticky thread if you haven't already. Lots and lots of folks had great things to say about our darlin'. She was a beautiful person.

I already donate to the ASPCA and have no interest in donating to anything with religious connatations. But I've always been an admirer of Doctors Without Borders. Sounds good to me.
Or one of you could adopt one of my
cats. I'm too poor to care properly for 13 of them.:D

Jolt really sucks! God, I hate that!

As I recall, two of the options were running neck and neck: Breast Cancer Research and The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, yes???
