Housing development names

Why are housing developments named after what they killed or destroyed in order to build the houses. Places like "Oak Grove" No oaks now. "Deer Run" Well they used to run there. "Willow Creek" The creek is now in a big tube underground and the willows are long gone.

Then to rub salt in the wound, they put a tombstone at the entrance to commemorate what they killed or destroyed so everyone that lives there or visits can see the epitaph every time they drive in.

Does anyone else find this a strange custom?
