Trumpets?

Ok so the question came up and no matter what I do I can't find it with a Google search or when I ask Jeeves... when I type in 'What is the thing called that you put at the end of a trumpet?' all I get is bible verses for some reason...

So! If any of you know anything about trumpets, we're wondering about the little round thing you put at the end of a trumpet while you're playing it that makes it go 'wau wau wau'. Kinda looks like a ball cut in half that's big enough to cover the hole there.

I so hope I'm making a little bit of sense...

It's a particular kind of mute. I'm not sure what you mean by "wau wau wau", but if you mean the little jazzy-kind of trumpet sound, then you might be thinking of a wah-wah mute. The only other possibility I can think of is a plunger mute, and I think you'd know if it was a plunger mute, 'cause well....it's the top of a plunger.
