The modern version of "arranged marriage?"

COMMENTARY: I've heard of lots of people meeting via the Internet, and some of them getting married later, but I think this is a first. What do you think about this? I wish them all the luck in the world! ( This is from an Associated Press release, but I got it in an email. )

Online Chatting Leads to Virtual Wedding

January 13, 2006 4:08 AM EST
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Rita Sri Mutiara Dewi's fiance could not get time off from his job in the United States. But that didn't stop the couple - who have never met in person - from tying the knot on Thursday.

And a Muslim cleric who witnessed the ceremony between the Indonesian lovers declared it legal, she said, even though they were on opposite ends of the earth.

"We are happy that we're married now, even though we had to do it via the Internet," said Dewi, 50, noting that the two used a video link so her relatives could see her 52-year-old groom.

Dewi met Wiriadi, a physiotherapist who works at a hospital in California, in an Internet chat room several months ago. They exchanged pictures and contacted each other almost every day, she said, speaking usually online but other times by phone.

In November Wiriadi proposed. Over the Internet, of course.

Dewi, who works as a teacher in Malaysia, returned to Indonesia for the virtual wedding. Wiriadi, who uses only one name, was in California. It was the second marriage for both.

Dewi said Friday she plans to travel to the United States next month to meet her new husband.

I figured they'd be thrilled. At least there wasn't any pre-marital naughtiness, right?

Takes no sex before marrage one step further... I can't wait for the girl to suddenly say "Actually I'm a guy with funny pics :P"

Well, I don't mind "premarital naughtyness" at all, and some on here call me a "neo-con" all the time! :D

no this isnt the modern version of an arranged marriage. in an arranged marriage SOMEONE has seen and OK'd the prospective bride and groom.

this is the modern version of people falling in love through correspondance. is there a word for that?

you would think that people who have failed at marriage once would be more careful the second time. the net is a great place to meet cool people but its no substitute for face to face meetings. only a fool makes this kind of committment to someone they have never really met.

Unfortunately, we've no shortage of fools.

ive known a few couples who decided to move in together before meeting in real life. and one couple who decided to marry the day after they met in real life.

none of those lasted and most were complete disasters. there is just no substitute for getting to know each other in real life before setting up housekeeping. you cant know somemone well enough online no matter how much time you spend talking

i have known people who met on the internet who ended up married or in otherwise really good relationships. they just didnt rush it by moving in together sight-unseen.

Well, although that's definitely a reality-discordant position, it doesn't so much "annoy" me as just make me laugh at whomever said it. :D

Very true. As a matter of fact, you can be married to someone for over 30 years and still not know them nearly as well as you thought you did! :(

Like most neo-cons you're just a liberal who hasn't come to terms with the fact.
