Didn't we already try and do our own Dr. Who and botch the whole deal?

Although from what I scanned (who reads any more? sigh...) it looks like it's just running the series' ninth doctor here as well as there, which doesn't seem that bad. Except that I don't want to go through all that work to catch up...how long has that show been going? 25 years or something? Sweet crap, that's a lot of catching up...

Dr Who started 42 years ago, but there was a break of about 15 years before it was re-started last year.

I thought that some of the older series had been shown in the US already, and I was surprised that the new one hasn't yet (it was being shown in Canada only a couple of weeks behind the UK broadcasts).

This one is fairly stand alone. You don't really have to have seen the other seven (I don't count the movie) to get the gist.

I've already seen them though, so all this does is put back the date for me to buy the DVDs. Meanwhile, season two will be airing in the rest of the world in 2006, putting the US a year behind.

I hope the Sci-fi channel will exercise the option and catch up.

I used to watch old episodes on PBS, even went to a PBS sponsered convention because some friends where going. I never saw enough to really know what was going on. I know there are Cybermen, may have seen an episode of those guys, saw a few Dalek episodes with that half Dalek dude in it. And The Master, saw an episode or two with that guy, what-renegade time lord or something like that.

I imagine some PBS stations still run it. Right before that guy who does astronomy shorts....

Yeah, we actually got ahold of Series one in DivX format, so we watched them sitting in front of our little computer monitor with the only sound coming from the speakers straight in front of us. And they were still REALLY GOOD.

And yeah, there's no need to catch up. There never really has been. You can just tune in at any point and watch an episode. Now. Back in the old days, each story had four to six episodes running half an hour each, with a few exceptions. The Sontaran Experiment (during which Tom Baker broke his leg) lasted, I believe two episodes. The Dalek Master Plan lasted twelve. (Six HOURS!)

Series One is designed to be watched by itself as it reintroduces all the things that have gone before. It was the intention for it to be standalone for the new generation and if they like, can watch the Classic Series for the full in-depth story and continuity.

You can buy the Series One (DVD) Box Set, but it's delayed in America until July something, after they air it on the sci fi channel.

I do have to say that Series One is very good. To the point that my mum, who hated the show when I watched it during the 80s once rebuked dad with "You can't go out, it's Saturday night. Doctor Who night!"
