The Web World War

Does anyone have any thoughts on the current animosity between eBaumsworld.com and YTMND and allied Internet communities? The current conflict is documented and can be accessed at Wikipedia.

It just seemed somewhat relevant as some NationStaters quite enjoy roleplaying war, but we now have what may be construed as organized widespread attacking over (what may amount to) "nations" of the Internet.

I've never really much appreciated Ebaums and quite enjoyed a phase when I was very involved in YTMND. But I guess battle lines are drawn. Remember that in the case of Ebaums at least, choosing to visit his site draws advertising income. If you disagree with the practices of Eric Bauman, then battle lines are drawn.

I'm not very active in NS forums, and I'll try to be more active henceforward. I just wanted to know your reception on the matter at hand.

I think it's great when a DOS attack is caused by thousands of separate users refreshing their browsers. It's like democracy in action.

Ebaumsworld makes approximately two million dollars from advertising every year for work that he stole. The creators of the work get nothing.

Real enough for you yet?

Oh, so when we're all posting as usual on Jolt forums, doing what comes naturally in the course of following the Terms of Use, we're inadvertently causing a DOS attack...

How do you tell the difference between a popular forum with too many simultaneous users for its servers, and a DOS attack?

The existence of an organized campaign along the lines of the following:

People posting in other forums with the messages "Help create a DoS attack on day X" followed by thousands of confirmations, followed by conversation along the lines of "We pnwed teh N00bs!!!!"

We frown on these attacks as particularly cowardly, and remind people to look at our TOS if they are considering organizing a similar movement.

The best revenge, if he has stolen content, is to release the pack of copywrite lawyers who will be ONLY too glad to force him to remove the content and get a slice of the compensation he'll have to pay if they can prove their case.

Ironically, eBaumsworld has a page displaying several cease-and-desist letters they have received and then ignored.

On top of eBaums disregard for the legal process, many of those who's work is stolen are not US residents and/or have very few resources.

Also, chill. No one has ever suggested attacking Nationstates.

At least not in non-musical form. NS the Musical.

Seriously, I never knew this about eBaumsworld :(. I'll not be going back there again.
