But yeah...umm i guess because they don't want to be late, they rush to get there.

Which brings a new point, that they should maybe make them come earlier?

Its a potential problem anytime you have too many people packed too tightly into too small an area.
Maybe this will give people in charge some incentive to look into methods of moving people safely in an out. There has to be a way to coordinate the number of people entering with the number of people exiting.

I don't get it. I was at Woodstock '99. We were all hot, dirty, angry with the lack of clean facilities and exorbitant prices, but we didn't stampede. Sure some people got hurt in the mosh pits, one even got his leg broke during Metallica's set. Sure we lit some fires, but we didn't stampede. Why so many stampedes at the Haj?

Good point. I don't know exactly how many people were there, but it certainly didn't number in the millions. Maybe they should limit the number of people who can attend the Haj and hold it several times a year. That way you can still allow the same total number of people to attend, but they won't all be there at the same time.

Thanks. It's really very similar except for the haj doesn't involve smoking over an ounce of weed and drinking quarts of vodka while listening to mostly shitty bands interspersed with a handfull of good ones.

It happened every year, and no idiot mullah has so far blamed Isreal for this.

hmm, but Isreal is to blame, does this mean thay have a mind controll device that makes people, you know, panic and stamp each other, I'll tell you one thing, you can say a lot about the jews, but they are darn good scientists;)

I honestly don't give a damn because the highest Mullah at the event was preaching hate against the west and Israel. I don't hate all Muslims, but most Muslims hate me for my religion because I am a Jew and would love to see me drown in the Mediterranean Sea so I don't give a damn. I don't wish stuff like this on them, but I don't really go all emotional when it happens either,

The magnitude of the Hajj is humongous. Think of it this way; there are 1.2 billion Muslims in the world. Every Muslim who is able to is required to complete the Hajj at least once in their life. The Hajj is once a year. There are obviously millions of people doing it every year. Even in the First World people would die if you had millions of people in a small place.

The fact that it is a time of religious and spiritual ecstacy for many (unlike, frex, viewing the Pope's coffin) is also going to lead to a greater occurence of those accidents which are the result of the exuberance that such states are wont to produce.

It happens every year at the stoning of the Devil (and during other processions there). They have fires that kill people.

Think about it this way. It's a crowd of millions - not hundreds of thousands, or a crowd you might see in a football stadium - but millions of people.

Millions of people camping out. Milling about. It doesn't take much to have a few hundred people killed by accident.

They've been doing it this way for over a thousand years. It works for them.

If you are a seffard you know what I am talking about!

And wasn't Hitler Christian?
I mean whats up with muslim hate, christians have killed more jews then the muslims have...
And should I hate

Not that that is relevant. Anyways both you and the arabs are semites so I can't honestly tell the difference when you are standing next to each other.

I mean, well us whites[aryans] have done a lot more shit against you then your fellow semites, the arabs..

you ought to hate us more if you are to hate them!

Yeah, but I don't think most muslims go:P

But Islam, was to be an Arab edition of The Christian, or jewish fate. It was only meant to Unite the Arabs, and make them a bit more civilized, you know, stop offering humans to several gods. And hence it was never meant to be this many people as it was not inntended as a world religion. It gained new ground in Persia, and later also in North-africa, this becouse eastern roman power was weakened after justinians pledge to unite the mediterreninan, and take back rome.... In all theologicly its mostly the same thing as the other mono thingis. In the same way Christianety was taken as the romen state religon to keep the empire under controll at a time when people had lost faith in the old gods.

Its all politicks really, if God does exsist, he will be pissed that so many poele have made politicks out of him and killed others..
But then agains, these mono religions, that are the offspring of the jewish faith are better then sacreficing your first born to the god hampsterball;)

How about multiple Easters, or Christmases?
As far as I can tell, this is the closest thing to it in Islam
However, would similar deaths occur if the Jews were required to visit Jerusalem once in the life, and only had 5 days a year to do it?
Likewise with Catholics and the Vatican?

I'd just like to mention that the reason this happened (or so I heard) was that a few people tripped over bags and backpacks lying on the ground.

If you've ever been in big mass so large that it can lift you off your feet (Sydney Harbour New Year 2000 for the fireworks - one of the scariest things I've ever done) you'll understand that in a case like this, there is little that can be done but allow for many, many paths from the place to the hotels, not just one big one, and to make sure that the path is clear.

I also heard many people didn't even realise what was happening and only heard of the "stampede" later on.
