Forests are now responsible for Global Warming!

Scientists in Germany have discovered that ordinary plants produce significant amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which helps trap the sun's energy in the atmosphere.
The findings, reported in the journal Nature, have been described as "startling", and may force a rethink of the role played by forests in holding back the pace of global warming.
"Quickly! We must cut down the all the trees! To the rainforest!"

The researchers used complex climate modeling software to simulate changes in forest cover and then examined the effects on global climate. Their results were surprising. “We were hoping to find that growing forests in the United States would help slow global warming,” Caldeira said. “But if we are not careful, growing forests could make global warming even worse.”

T'is true. Maybe we'll actually have to cut carbon emissions (:eek: ) instead of throwing all this crap around then working out how to deal with it.

The issue is not whether they produce methane or not, it's whether they produce enough to invalidate their role as carbon dioxide processors.
