Converting .EXE files

I like my Mac, I don't regret getting it. It's reliable and easy to use. The trouble comes when you try to download programs...and it turns out to be an ".EXE" file...

I hate .EXE files...

Many a time I've downloaded a mod for Warcraft III and it turns out it don't work.

I use a computer yes, but at the very core I'm rather illiterate. Can you help me? Is it possible to convert an .EXE file to something my machine will find palatable.

(And in the off chance...do you know any Warcraft III mods that AREN'T .EXE?)

Thanks in advance.

Short answer is that no, nobody can help you with that. The long answer is, it can be done, but it is necessarily complicated and you might not want to do it if you are a self-described computer illiterate.

If I were you...I would just keep looking for Mac alternatives.

I wrote a long description detailing many options here, but most are unlikely to ever work and would require an expert instead of mere computer-literacy. So I deleted it, and instead I'll include this link.

This or something like it is probably your best bet for getting things running. But it'll cost you (assuming you do things legally) and you will have to deal with Windows when you run Windows .EXEs.

I'll leave it to somebody else to find your Warcraft mods.

What is this..."legality" you speak of...?

It can be done but its hard like stated ... I have only SEEN it done myself

Usually its not worth it

The only thing I can even recommend is trying something like darwine (yes spelled like that)

It is a windows emulated work environment layer that SHOULD allow you to run windows executables but I am not sure that it will work on anything but the new intel processors (they were having issues a few months ago)

Well, if you're really lucky, these mods might just be self-expanding zip archives. I don't know, I've never modded Warcraft 3.
Anyway, if they are, the maccy equivalent of Winzip or Winrar ought to be able to get the files out of them. You'd then put them wherever the self-extractor would.

Otherwise it's emulation or recompilation, which is probably more trouble than a Warcraft 3 mod's worth.

What is this..."legality" you speak of...?He means that a legally bought copy will (of cource) cost you. Getting a pirated one instead shouldn't be too hard, however. It's a popular, well-known product, so it should be possible to find pirated copies using most popular P2P networks, bittorrent search engines, etc.*

*Note: (for the sake of the forum rules, just in case) I neighter encourange nor discourage you to download pirated stuff.

...I was just being snarky. Don't worry about it.

Even if you could convert the mod to a Mac application, I think it would be incomplatable with the Mac version of Warcraft 3.
