Happy 100th Birthday, Albert Hofmann, discoverer of LSD

Today marks the 100th birthday of Albert Hofmann, the Swiss scientis who discovered LSD in 1943. He became thus the probably most influental scientist of popular culture in the last century.

He himself always thought of LSD as "wonder drug and problem child" (the title of his autobiography). Apart from the more well known uses experienced mostly by the psychadelic sub-culture of the 60s and 70s, the substance was also successfully used in psychotherapy. There are currently thoughts on whether it should be made legal again for the use in psychotherapy in clinical environments.

So, what do you think?

As a little food for thought here's an article from the Guardian on Psychiatrist calls for end to 30-year taboo over use of LSD as a medical treatment (http://www.guardian.co.uk/drugs/Story/0,,1683780,00.html)

Huh, had I known I would have done a tab in his honor, though truth be told I've never really liked acid the times I've tried it. Little intense. Actually probably a good thing I didn't know...it's not like that kind of thing was what he was going for anyway...now Ken Kessey's or Timothy Leary's 100th...

No, although Hofmann is quite in favour of opening the "doors of perception", he approaches it from a very different angle than most. He compares it to the shamanic rituals of Indians and is very much against the use of LSD as just a recreational drug.

Then, of course, there's the CIA and their approach. They did experiments using it for some kind of psyche warfare. Here's a link to MKULTRA: CIA Mind Control (http://www.meta-religion.com/Secret_societies/Conspiracies/Mind_Control/mkultra.htm). A bit of search on google brings up lots more on the subject.

Look up Project Artichoke as well. MKULTRA's dark brother.

As for LSD, I didn't like it. Tripping out isn't my style. But it is safe and non-addictive. So it should be grand under medical supervision.

If it weren't for child abuse-induced by drug abuse, I would say legalize all drugs. Let the idiots mess themselves up with the hard stuff, natural selection will take its course.

Oh thank God, I was starting to wonder if maybe my friends had made this up as an excuse to spend all day tripping. I, of course, decided not to partake in the action, but pretty much only because I had a job interview to go to. And they didn't save me any by the time I got back.

Hmph. Some friends they are....informing me of an unofficial "holiday", then not allowing for me to join in the festivities....

Go freak them out. It shouldn't take much.

I think , LSD is the only drug who is worth its name.

Ah, if only. I should've thought to do that earlier, but the celebration started at about 11 am, and it's now 2.11 am, so....my guess is that they've come down or passed out. Either way, it's lost it's appeal to me. 'Specially because I'm heading to bed soon....but I'll definitely keep that in mind next time. I'm excellent at grudge-holding.
