Worst Call in Sports History?

In your opinion what has been the worst officiating call in history? (Any MAJOR Sport)
Was it Brett Hull's skate in the crease no call in the 98 Stanley Cup?
The USSR getting 4 extra seconds in the Olympic games to defeat the US?
Texas Tech's "touchdown" against Oklahoma this year?
was it colorado's fifth down several years back?
Or another one..

The referee who didn't allow a 'goal' for Chesterfield against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup semi-final in 1997 (I think). Chesterfield would've made it to the final if that goal had stood.

Darn I was going to name these. The USSR game has to be #1.

Being from the 12 (Nebraska) I didn't think anyone else would remember the other two.

The "Testeverte Touchdown" was pretty horrible.

The "tuck rule" play took advantage of an obscure rule that has now been changed at least.

But the worst call ever? That's easy. Not hanging the guy who invented golf.

The Double Pump Fake Pass Fumble no call against Patriots Quarterback 3 Seasons ago.
Bastards.

Buzzer beater that wasn't in the 3rd game of the Sacremento Kings vs LA Lakers 2 or 3 seasons ago end of the second Quarter.

Lakers went on to win the series and then the Final but Sacremento would have had a large series lead 3-0.

Don't shoot me if i am wrong shoot the next guy.....

Anything by Paul Honis or Steve Walsh.-They are against Wellington.
Last seconds of Roosters vs Cowboys in NRL Semifinal 2004 Roosters make a penalisable offence then there is a bit of fistycuffs with a few seconds left then the fulltime hooter goes. The ref blows the whistle for fultime instead of awarding a penalty to the cowboys.

The coin toss error from a few years back (I think it was the 1998 Thanksgiving Day game between Pittsburgh and Detroit) where the ref fucked up the overtime COIN TOSS. How do you do that?

It was either later that year or the following year where the NY Jets beat the Seattle Seahawks on a last-minute "touchdown" where it was clear that the ball carrier was at least a yard short of the goal, and any replay could show that. The ref claims he missed that call because he thought the ball carrier's helmet was the ball. Uh-huh. Last time I checked, the ball was brown and elliptical; the helmet was green and somewhat spherical.

This past Rose Bowl had a couple of screwups...nothing as egregious as the above two, but still, the refs missed a Texas runner's knee being down on a touchdown, and they called what was obviously a fumble that would have sealed a USC win an incomplete pass, and Texas then went on to win. Not bitter or anything, though my parents are USC alums...but it's the biggest stage in college football; the refs need to be more watchful.

Beer-league softball game. I'm playing catcher. Play at home. I'm left-handed, so in stead of reaching for the guy (who was sliding to the outside of the plate,) I lunged backward, tagging the sliding runner down the entrie length of his body and eventually landing on the guy, stopping him in his tracks about a foot from the plate.

Umpire said I missed the tag.

The bad call? NBC didn't show the last minute of the game because it was time for "Heidi" to be broadcast.

Down 38-14 in the third quarter, the 49ers scored 25 unanswered points to beat the Giants. However, New York did have a chance to win on the final play of the game with a field goal attempt. But a botched snap resulted into a feeble pass play that fell incomplete. The Giants were also called for having an illegal man downfield on the play, and the game ended. The following day, it was revealed that the penalized player had in fact checked in as an eligible receiver before the field goal attempt. Furthermore, the 49ers should have been called for pass interference, which would have given the Giants another chance to win.-Wiki

But then agian I'm a 49ers fan so I was happy with the result.

96 ALCS Game 1: Guy reaches over wall to take a fly ball from landing in an Oriole's glove. The ump rules it a homer despite the fact that fan interferance goes against the home team (the game was at Skankee Stadium). This set the tone for the next decade.

In my opinion it was the no call foul on Buck Williams in the 1991 NBA western conference finals, Portland vs. L.A. The biggest travesty I've ever laid eyes on. It was obvious to me at the time that an establishment wanted to see the two biggest superstars in basketball play eachother (i.e. Magic and Jordan), no matter how worthy their teams actually were. It disgusted me.

NHL thugs gang up on hockey fan page

This is urgent news for every hockey fan, especially every fan on-line ... A fellow fan and webmaster is currently
under attack from the mirthless, thin-skinned, deep-pockets corporate creeps at the NHL.

What follows is a synopsis of the battle so far, written by Jim Kelley, sports columnist
of the Buffalo News and former president of the Professional Hockey Writers Association

http://members.aol.com/SportInfRe/IXnews00.htm

...
The picture is one of several seen around the world depicting Hull with his foot a good
12 inches into the goal crease and blocking Hasek from using his stick. It shows the puck
[outside] the crease and states the apparent rules infraction, a rule the NHL said didn't apply
and has since dismissed.
"Originally we thought we would sell a few items for fun and that would help us pay to keep
the site going," Spring said. "When the letter came we made changes (deleting the Cup from the
bumper sticker and the picture from the shirts). I discussed it with an attorney who is a family
friend, but he's not a specialist in copyright or anything. I'm still really not sure I'm doing
anything wrong."
Spring, who operates a book store called Flight Into Fantasy on Clinton Street, said he'd
like to have some firm legal advice but doesn't have the resources right now. He said he's
redesigning the bumper sticker using a generic buffalo and trying to come up with a new idea
for the shirt, but he can't understand why he can't show the picture of the controversial goal on
his site or even quote the NHL rule book as to why rule 78, Protection of the Goalkeeper,
does or does not apply (the NHL says the rule book is also copyrighted).
"It doesn't seem right," Spring said. "A lot of people look at it (the picture) and then
they understand that it (the goal) shouldn't have counted."
But if he can't show the picture, what's the point?
The NHL has a right to protect its copyrighted material, but seems to be taking this one
to the extreme. The picture illustrates the controversy. It was taken by a person covering a
news event. It was published in publications (and on Web sites) around the world
and Spring credits the photographer and the organization he works for (the Associated Press).
But because he happens to believe the NHL is wrong, the league appears to be going after him
with all the legal might it can muster.

In the 1991 FA Cup Gasoigne hit Garry Parker square in the chest with a high kick. Only a few minutes later Gasoigne savagely kicked Gary Charles in the right knee and the ball was long gone. The ref, Mr. Roger Milford, didn't do anything on either of the two attacks! The two teams playing were the Hotspurs and Forest. Gasoigne was on Hotspurs.

Actually, any true Giants fans would likely call the suspect spotting of Gifford's run in the fourth quarter of the 1958 NFL Championship Game against the Baltimore Colts as the worst call to go against them, but that is neither here nor there.

The two I can think of as the worst calls were the bribed handing of the silver medals in figure skating to that Canadian couple in 2002, and the terrible pass interference call called on Eric Wright in the 1982 NFC Championship game that handed the Super Bowl birth to the Eagles instead of the Niners. I'll admit though that I'm a bit biased on that last one.

Let's be fair, Gazza didn't play in for Spurs again after that, because he buggered off to Italy. And he fucked his leg in the tackle on Charles.

there were several horrible calls against the losing teams... i'll put these two teams down as those that were hosed worst in the 2005-6 college bowl season:

Michigan, vs. Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl (several bad late calls, running way too much time off the clock, etc... hurt Mich)

Iowa, vs. Florida in the Outback Bowl (the famous onside kick offside bullshit call toward the end to keep Iowa from having a chance to tie the game; two BS first half calls to prolong a Florida strive on which they later scored a TD... the refs were responsible for a 7-14 point swing in Florida's favor... Iowa lost by 7)

instant replay in porfessional football. It just takes too long. Yes it makes sure "the rihgt team gets the right call" and often changes the results of a game. However, the NFL is a buissiness. Their product is an exciting, brutal and faced paced game. Instant replay damages this product. As a consumer, when I watch football, I expect to be thrilled and not lulled into sleep. I want to see competition, not the same shot 20 times because mabye the ball came a little loose as he hit the ground. They pay good refs lots of $, let them make the calls on the feild.

I saw preist holmes score a touchdown last year where he dove under some guy from the five yard line and stretched the ball out. His knee was clearly down before he sailed over (ya it was sweet, but the ref could clearly see he didn't make it in airborne)

Arjen Robben's sending off against Sunderland yesterday was a pretty rotten decision but surely nothing compares to the Harald Schumacher - Patrick Battiston incident in the 1982 World Cup semi-final. Battiston couldn't walk for months afterwards and the ref didn't even give a foul.:headbang:
