Name my baby!

Pantera
10-01-2006, 21:46
Yes, my fine friends, the player behind Pantera will once again become a father early this summer. This will be baby number two for me, and I'm having problems deciding on a name.

My first was a girl, her name is Brooklyn.

http://img327.imageshack.us/my.php?image=babyblue22ik.jpg

That's her. Gorgeous, ain't she?

But, we're thinking this next kid is going to be a boy, and I'm utterly stuck on a name. My name is 'John' which is boring, generic, and shitty all around. I've always hated it, and would never give him that name. My proper name is Johnathan, but I don't care for that much, either...

Added to that, my last name is Cox, which utterly sucks. Nothing sounds good with it, too short and harsh, I think.

SO! What do you all think? I've been leaning towards 'Rocker', but my girlfriend thinks that will condemn him to a life of pornography. 'Rocker Cox returns to the screen in his thirty sixth movie. An epic of the Roman Empire and the glory of it's greatest conflict: the Phallic Wars!'

:) But, seriously. Help me out.

-Pants

Ahhh, PS: Let's keep the jokes about my last name to a minimum, please. Trust me, I've heard them all.

I agree- your little girl is adorable! I like the name Brooklyn as thats where I'm from.
I bet many people call her "Brook", which is pretty on its own.

When we were expecting my first son, I liked "Max"-short for "Maximum", which would go well with my last name. My wife said it was too much, so we named him after me. Then my second son has my middle name as his first name. My daughter is named after my grandmother. So we kept all family names.

Ever consider you're middle name for your son? Or your father's name or another relative's? If its a good name you and the wife like and it wont be one the other kids will have fun mocking when its paired with your last name, it would really be a huge honor to that family member.

From a statistical point of view, giving a boy an unusual name will effect his future chances of success. The strange stat is a man with an unusual name will either be very successful or a complete failure. An upside down normal curve. Very few with unusual names will fall in the middle.

It is usually advised that people with short last names pick longer names. And long last names have short first names. This gives a better balance and simply sounds better.

Be very careful about initials. Men often are asked to initial. Think of all combinations of initials. ie. first-last first-middle middle-last first-middle-last With a girl you should also consider any initial for a last name.

Cute, joke names may sound fun, but most with them fail in life. Also consider historical figures with your last name. For instance a "Jesse James" will most certainly live up to his name.

Always consider nick names for any name. For instance, Richard Cox sounds ok, but Dick Cox becomes a joke.

Don't give nick names for a real name. Jimmy, Freddie and Billy are cute for a baby, but cause problems for a professional man.

If you research you can find stats for nearly any name. More for men than women as women haven't been in the workplace for as long so haven't had as much research.

I'm sorry if any of this insults any reader. Names have been researched and the stats are valid. I hold a MS in Communications. Names fall into what is called "artifactual communications" in other words, how things you own effect you and communicate to those around you.

Though seriously, whatever you name your son, please don't add to the rash of idiotic names or kreeatif name spellings that have been popping up among children lately. Please.

If you want something unique, go for older names that have become uncommon these days, and don't name you kid something like... I dunno, Obsidian. Or Rhobart (as in Robert). Seriously. Children are cruel, naming your kid something weird is just cruel. And taking a normal name and spelling it weird is just stupid.

I only have name advice........

don't name your kid a short name like Bobby, name him Robert, some day the kid is going to grow up and will want a "grown up name", my name is short for another and people are always asking me "is that short for?" and it annoys the crap out of me. Oh, and it doesn't look professional on my business card or resume because it looks like a "kid's name"

name him something with flexibility, something that can be shortened so that kids aren't making up stupid and embarassing and hard to explain nicknames for him (like I got strapped with Smunkee, I still can't explain really what it means or remember much about where it came from and yeah people think it's weird too)

If you are going to do a middle name go out the back door and yell the entire name at the top of your lungs a few times, to see if
a it sounds good
b if it runs together weird and makes any obscene words.

try to pick something that is not easily mocked (example I used to have a teacher in middle school named Harry Dick, true story. We made his life miserable :D)

wow. I posted first and then went back to read the thred, we said almost the same thing. I always had a theory that people would "live up to their name" which is why I didn't name my kids "trendy" names, I mean sure they are named after Star Trek characters but at least you can't really tell, unless you watch a lot of Star Trek. LOL

My mother didn't think about much when she named me, and now I am stuck with an annoying name (it's a male name and I am female, it's a shortened name, and it's easily mispronounced so people end up calling me names that aren't mine  )

Though Joachim is an interesting name, that's for sure, almost no one is ever going to pronounce it correctly, which could easily annoy the hell out of a person. Not to mention that it sounds like it might fit with a specific ethnicity, and I have to say it can seem a bit odd if someone is named out of their ethnicity. Like naming a girl that's utterly caucasian on both sides of their family Hoshiko or Miakoda. They're nice names, but it's a bit odd.

You are fully empowered to name BOTH of his names...perhaps you could give him a full Roman Nam (e.g.Gaius Julius Caesar- Though to be fair you can't actually give him the third Roman name until he earns it in some way) or perhaps go for a period themed name like: Marmaduke Wellstington or Oberk the Indestructible.
