Bus driver accused of running marathons while collecting workers compBy Terri Morgan

SANTA CRUZ — Physicians often prescribe physical therapy and mild exercise to people rehabilitating an injury. But you'd be hard pressed to find someone who recommends running a marathon while recovering from a back injury.

So when inspectors at the Santa Cruz County District Attorney's office learned that bus driver Johnny Chavarria, 57, allegedly completed the Big Sur Marathon while receiving thousands of dollars in funds from workers' compensation, they grew suspicious.

Chavarria of Salinas injured his back while driving a bus for the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District, the District Attorney's Office said.

He was arrested Friday and is charged with fraud and grand theft following an investigation into the injury claim he filed in June 2003.

"You can't run marathons if you are not well enough to drive a Metro bus," said District Attorney Bob Lee. "It's not just wrong; it's criminal."

'Promised wife' case man arrested

A 56-YEAR-old man who was convicted after having sex with his 14-year-old promised wife has been arrested.

The man, referred to only as GJ, spent one month in jail after being sentenced in August for having carnal knowledge of the girl and beating her with a boomerang.
Northern Territory Chief Justice Brian Martin sentenced the man, from the Yarralin community southwest of Katherine, to 20 months' jail, suspended after one month.

But the Director of Public Prosecutions successfully appealed against the sentence on the grounds it was manifestly inadequate.

The NT Court of Criminal Appeal ordered the man to serve a further 17 months in prison on December 22.

The man was given two weeks to hand himself in but failed to appear.
