Girls, Sex and Cancer

I have read a great deal of information that suggests that there is an extremely high link between girls who have sex at very young ages and their getting cervical cancer. Since the mother of my friend's kids, who is 21, just got diagnosed with it, and she had her first child at 13, I think there may be something to it. Can someone please provide me with more concrete information, as they would like to read up on it? I've done some searches on google, but have only come up with conservative and non-conserevative sites arguing about the effectiveness of condoms etc. in preventing it.

I don't have a link for this, but I remember reading an article some years ago which established a statistical link between cervical cancer and having unprotected sex with multiple partners.

Isn't cervical cancer thought to be caused by quite a common (and otherwise harmless) virus?
I know there's a link between cancer and the HPV, which is a virus that can be transmitted by sex. (It's quite a common virus, but dangerous when infecting certain areas)

Most cervical cancer is indeed caused by a particular virus, one that typically doesn't do much of anything to the human body. Happily, there is now a vaccine that appears to be 100% effective at stopping this virus. Unhappily, a great many Americans OPPOSE giving this vaccine to their children. They believe that, somehow, getting this vaccine will make their children want to be promiscuous (don't ask me, I think they're all deranged lunatics). In other words, they think that preaching about virginity is more important than the lives of their daughters.

I don't have any sources on that, yet I find it hard to believe somehow.
Considering that it is still common in many countries for young women (or rather children) to be married by the age of 10 and to have their first children soon after, it should be traceable in those countries at least...

Perhaps, but in countries where women are married off at 10 they also are probably not getting the kind of health care they deserve. They're probably dying in childbirth or being stoned to death before they're old enough to worry about cervical cancer.

There is a definite link between sex and cervical cancer. It's a fact.
However, the number of people you have sex with doesn't make the difference and it doesn't matter when you have sex. The fact is that you're more vunerable to cervical cancer after the hymen has been broken. If you continue to have sex, it doesn't increase your chances. That's why women should be tested every year after losing their virginity. It only takes a couple minutes. Using "I haven't had sex this year" isn't a valid excuse. Cervical cancer is a continuing risk after losing your virginity, and it definitely should be tested for annually.
I know this because my doctor likes to arm me with knowledge at my yearly physicals.

Certain types of sexual behavior increase a woman's risk of getting HPV infection:
* having sex at an early age
* having many sexual partners
* having sex with uncircumcised males
Oh, and that stuff about broken hymens? Hilariously ridiculous.

Agree. My mom said her aunt had a "reputation." She was doing a family tree and asked my grandfather who was her husband. He replied "The US Navy"
She died of cervical cancer......

If you don't have anything meaningful to contribute, get out of my thread. I am not asking for judgment or self-righteous trolling. I am asking for advice.

Thats interesting because I heard most of the statical significance also ties itself to HPV ... which you are more at risk for with multiple partners.

Shame? I have no shame.
I am not a sheep and as a result I am above your petty morals.
You see a homeless person and you give him pity and money. I see a homeless person and I spit in his/her face.
You see a whore and you call her a victim. I see a whore and call her what she is, a whore.
I spit on your morals and shame...
Aww you must get all the girls with attitude like that ... or guys whichever you prefer

Any time someone or some agency starts going off about cancer risk, I always want to put things in perspective:
cervical cancer rate worldwide: 16 per 100,000 (0.016%)
auto accident rate: 1 per 59 (1.695%)
winning the lottery : 1 in 14 million (really really small %)
People worry about getting cervical cancer.
Nobody worries about getting in an auto accident.
Everybody thinks they are going to win the lottery.

Yeah, and if you had read the OP sweetheart, you'd know that this whole thread is on behalf of a friend of mine who just got diagnosed with cervical cancer. So to me, and my friends, those statistics mean shit.

You do not need to be a "whore" to contract HPV. HPV is a very common affliction. Many men are carriers and have no idea. Other know and don't care because it is usually asymptomatic. A study was done a Rutgers university a decade ago and it found that something like 40% of the female students tested positive for HPV. 5 million people have it in the US alone (that know about it). The numbers mostly come from females because they are the ones getting the pap smears (don't know if I spelled that right). If all men were tested the numbers would be much higher.

I understood that and I offer my condolences. However, I am suggesting that making major life-altering decisions is going to have little or no effect on the outcome. There are too many businesses out there manufacturing elephant repellent, and cancer, any kind of cancer, is definitely one of the more popular elephants.

Good point, Upward Thrust.
And Strasse II, I'm sure if you save up real hard, there's a whore out there somewhere who'll take your money. Until then, you just keep on pretending like you can get a woman without buying one.
Flaming not permitted. Knock it off.
And Strausse, if your only reason for being in this thread is to be obnoxious and derail the discussion, don't post here again.

I do realise this and I'm sorry. But the guy whose girlfriend has the cancer is an extremely close friend and I really, really get angry at the fact that people would dare to imply that people being stricken with this illness are whores who need to be shot. That my friend needs to be shot or deserves to die.

All they want is some information on the disease, how she got it etc., that's in plain English. I don't think they are intending to make life-altering decisions. It is a shock to be 21 years old and be told that you have cancer, you know. Noone thinks they're going to get cancer at 21. Especially after they've just had a baby, and have 2 other kids besides.

Stories and ideas that suggest dire consequences for sin are a result of moral panick.
Homosexuals will not cuase God to rain fire and Brimstone on our cities.
Bestiality will not cuase abomidable creators to be brought into existance.
Use of the left hand to write and do other such tasks will not cuase any one to become a criminal.
Abortions do not cuase women who where pregnant before abortion to automaticaly grieve for the kid they just killed.
These stories are similer to the story about rejecting Jesus as your lord and savior.
They are lies created in order to control people through fear.

What does that have to do with the links between cervical cancer and sex at a young age? I am trying to gather information on the cuases of cervical cancer, for a friend who's going through it, not get a sermon, or patronisation.

I think s/he was poking fun at our troll.
Mind you I am no expert so Fass can probably correct this but it was my impression that sex and cervical cancer tended to be for older women.
In the case of your friend, family history might be the issue.
