Oh goodness, my flatmates are preparing dinner...

It's going to be lentils with veggies, cooked until it looks like a greenish-brown mash.

Who else is getting "tortured" with food that is hardly eatable? By whom and what's the dish?

As I don't have any flatmates anymore nobody cooks for me ... so I get to decide what's for dinner.
...and before that... well... I shared a flat with an Italian girl and an otherwise talented cook. It was ... nice, to say the very least. :D

Usually I do the cooking and I dare say I'm an okay/good cook.

I made lasagna yesterday. It's.....interesting, to say the least.

The worst thing is that I'm going to have to eat it today and tomorrow, because I'm stony broke.

I once had a bowl of spinach for tea, I made the mistake of trying to 'flavour' it with some Cayene pepper...the results were not dissimilar to your smiley there, but from another end...

I was tortured growing up to my mothers cooking.

prime example was what me and the sibs dubbed as "Stir Fry Suprise"

my mother put meat and veggies on a stir fry pan, and well let's just say when it was on the table everything (meat and veggies) were all the same turd brown color and it tasted like squishy slaughterhouse floor meat blended with wilted veggies.

i don't know how she did it, but whatever she cooked always ended up lookin like something else.

and her "beef-a-roni" was another story...

You're not going to believe it, but that sort-of-stew tasted okay (means it could have been much, much worse). That may be due to a large amount of curry powder. And the lack of coconut milk that my flatmate usually pours over the stew.

So, if you ever need to get rid of boyfriend/girlfriend - this is a serious option.:p

lentils with vegetables...hmm...I am guessing your roomies are Indian. If they indeed are, you should ask them to stop cooking lentils just because it is easy for them and cook some biriyani or something.

as for what turns my stomach:

- cottage cheese
- mushrooms
- mustard on almost anything

i am a meat and potatoes and cheese guy (but not cottage cheese!)...

Nope, they're not. But one is quite a hippie and very interested into "ethno-food". Other people would just get some Chinese take-out, not her though.

Try some lentils some time. Decide for yourself.

I agree on cottage cheese. It's just yuck. And a girly thing. BTW my flatmates like cottage cheese. No surprise, really.

Lentil soup is delicious with carrot, onion and celery chopped into it. I'd suggest ham too, but since you're vegetarians, I guess that would not go over well.

Another nice soup is cream of zucchini -- boil the zucchini, then take them and put them through a food processor. Mix the resulting hot thick mush with broth (I use chicken, you might want to use vegetable) and simmer. Serve with one tablespoon of sour cream dropped into the bowl, along with some croutons.

You can add a little hot pepper to it to flavor, of course, and a bit of salt. lightly browned (as in golden and translucent) garlic cloves, also food processed into the mix, is nice too.

They're a little bean. They taste to me like starchy little beans with an unpleasant ashy/finely grainy texture. I haven't eaten them since I was a kid and I don't intend to start again.
