Mouse Thrown Into Fire Sets Home Ablaze

FORT SUMNER, N.M. -- A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

Poor mouse. Why not just give it a good whack on the head and then throw it into the fire?

Outside of the AP's inability to proofread for grammar, it occurs to me that the mouse got hurt....

Moron. If he wanted to get rid of it, think up of a way of killing it quickly so it won't reinfest, like, say, with a mouse trap, or something...

Actually this is the exact reason that farmers hate strike anywhere matches … mice have a tendency to set them off and run around the hay barn.

What's the way to torch the home that's made for you and me?

"Hmmm, droughts and high winds causing raging fires all over the place. I know, I'll get rid of these leaves with a giant bondfire in my backyard. Oh, look, a small scurrying rodent."

Ah the irony. I think that this is one of the funniest things I've ever heard of. As long as it doesn't happen to me .

He threw it on the fire? The man was obviously a top-shelf asshole and deserved to have his home and belongings immolated. I have nothing for him but a satisfied chuckle.

The very least he could have done is bash the thing on the head and thrown it in the alley. Some poor alleycat went hungry because of his insensitivity.

I have to admit, my first reaction on hearing this on my morning commute was "serves him right."

What kind of callous bastard throws a living creature into a fire?
I'd have had no problem if he'd killed it humanely (quickly and as painlessly as possible) and torched it, but you have to be a sadist to throw a live animal into a fire.

It was a fucking mouse. Who cares what he did to it. He didn't "deserve" to have all his belongings destroyed over the life of a meaningless mouse.

Uh huh.
You do know that cruelty to animals is often the way serial killers start, right?

Maybe the mouse didn't deserve to lose its life in a horrific way over some stupid human's need to be an ass. Besides, it was just stuff. Who cares?

TrashCat + Mouse = crunchy bits stuck in teeth. Mouse doesn't suffer unless I'm bored.

Rational Human + Mouse = squashed mouse on shoe. Mouse doesn't suffer.

Bunny-Hugger Human + Mouse = 6 hour drive in SUV to let mousie "live free". Urban Mouse terrified for 6 hours, weary of exhaust fumes from highway gets eaten by an Owl while trying to find a non-existant cupbord to hide in.

Idiot Human + Mouse = Burned down house.

Idiocy deserves everything it spawns.

This guy was burning leaves in what was said to be "Unseasonably dry and windy conditions..." which according to the article have already been linked to massive damage due to wildfires.

What possessed him to think this was a good idea?

Just goes to show you how much cruelty and stupidity go together.
