Denis Leary: No Cure for Cancer
George Carlin: Class Clown
I've gotta stick with the classics on this one. Anything by Monty Python.
Then again, I was the only one laughing through the entire Life of Brian when I had a few friends over to watch it. Some things just get funnier the more times you watch them.

Lewis Black's White Album and Rules of Enragement are good.
Jim Norton's funny. His new CD is Trinkets I Own Made From Gorilla Hands
Stephen Lynch gets me rolling in the aisle. However, he is not for the timid; if you can't handle graphic profanity, rampant blasphemy, and songs about pushing old men down flights of stairs, then Stephen Lynch is not for you.
Henry Rollins does some great "spoken word" stuff, too. The one about how he knocked himself out while on stage at a Brazillian rock concert is awesome, as is his rant about getting through airports. He's an aging rock god with a neck thicker than his head, so you know he's entertaining.

I recently watched the latest Chris Rock special.
Rock is still the best stand-up performer alive.
If youre looking for newer comedians, I recommend "The Amazing Jonathan"
Hes a crack-up.
I also really do love Dave Chappell.

I'm willing to discuss my grading system. We don't have to agree, but I'mm willing to go into detail on how I cam up with my choices:
In the case of Larry The Cable Guy vs. Ron White, Larry is considerably funnier on hs albums than on his "Blue Collar Comedy tour" appearances. ANd considerably coarser. For instance:
"Have you ever had an orgasm so good, you nearly knock yourself out on the edge of the bathtub? I'm just lucky the VCR didn't fall in." -Larry.
Also, Larry has two albums as opposed to Ron's one. There was considerably more material of Larry's that wasn't on 'Blue Collar' than Ron's material.
As for Mitch Hedberg, well let's just say that he died before his prime.

don't be nervous, hecklers can smell fear. Time your act, you need a 15 minute act, and a 25 minute act. Tell jokes about things you know, if you can personalize it everything goes over better. Try to rate your jokes A, B, or C
you should start with an A joke, have your B, and C's in the middle and end on an A, that way they remember you funny, if you end with a C they tend to forget that you were funny (even if it has only been 10 min since you told an A joke)
try to find universal humor until you get popluar, jokes about race, sex, and other things that might be offensive aren't best for your first show unless they are really really funny and few and far between.
Audience participation is fun, but try not to piss anyone off too bad because they will be waiting for you when you get off the stage. (and believe me they are scary)
If a joke doesn't go over well, don't explain it, just move on, and try to figure out later what went wrong.
That's about it. Comedy clubs usually have open mic nights, that is a good place to get started. ;)

Relatively fair enough, I still think the problem with Larry the Cable Guy is the jokes are too juvenile to make him funnier than anyone else.

Yes. He's good. When he doesn't screech. :p
He cracks me up when he does his Alien and Snake impressions. I like his joke about going back in time to the moment he is being conceived and runnign into the room, slapping his father on the ass and yelling "I'm your son! I'm your son from the future" and then running away.
Ron White grew up in Fritch, Texas, which is about 20 miles from where I live. Trust me, when he talks about how godawful boring that fucking place was, he's not exaggerating at all. He's damn funny.
I'd also join a few of the above posters and reccomend Bill Hicks. Fucking genius.
Richard Pryor. The man, the legend. Utterly hysterical. You can't go wrong with him.
Flight of the Condors are kind of goofy singer guys from New Zealand, but are funny as any I can think of. Great stuff, if you get the chance to watch.
EDITED: Ahhhh! I almost forgot Jim Brewer, I think his name is. The guy who played Bryan in Half-Baked? Whatever his name is, the guy is hilarious doing stand-up.
