So, for ever, then? WOuldn't it just make more sense for them to throw darts at a map of the world and send troops everywhere one lands?

To be serious, I think it's already there, with the supposed "War on Terror"
WWI was a new type of warfare (trenches) (well, new in the fact that it had never been done on that scale before)
WWII was new with the idea of a fast moving mechanised army (Blitzkrieg etc)
I think WWIII is a new type again, sort of global guerilla warfare/terrorrism. But I'm of the opinion that this war is one that has to be won in the proverbial "hearts and minds" and I don't see that happening for a while:(

OK, here's the real deal. America invades one-too-many Middle Eastern countries. China, interested in acquiring some of that oil for their rapidly-growing industries, uses this as an opportunity to challenge America on the issue. China and America will, of course, never go to war. Even if one side wins, they both lose.
While they are debating the conundrum, however, Luxembourg rises up with their superb army of genetically modified supersoldiers, which it then uses to take over the world. Earth is subsequently renamed to 'Luxembourgland' and all is right with the universe.

I think in an attempt to legitimise US actions by drawing parallels to the defensive nature of US actions in WWII, the Cold War is already referred to as "WWIII" by some Americans.
Which makes this now WWIV.
Personally, I don't think there'll be another world war as we know it for some time. Globalised economies make it pretty impossible, so it could only happen once all that broke apart, and then I wouldn't even know what the parties would be called.

Aren't all countries engaged in a true world war?
I see a big potential for WWIII in the Taiwan issue.
The Chinese I've talked to were quite surprised when I told them that the US would not sit idle while the PLA invaded Taiwan. In fact, the word "invasion" raised eyebrows, since Taiwan is part of China.
I earnestly hope that the government is more aware of the consequences of taking Taiwan by force than the citizens.

As an American, I tend to think of the Mediterranean as a European lake, the southern shore of which is ignored by Europeans in the hopes that it will just go away.
Someone's going to have to do something with all those unemployed people in North Africa.

Australia in a fit of pique over losing the ashes ( :D ) decide to launch an all out sport war in the field of Cricket Rugby and Darts smashing their rivals of us pommy bastards and the Kiwis, The Kiwis respond by sending an Airbourne Ninja Sheep operation backed by 5000 Beer swigging Louts (err rugby fans) Australia responds by crashing a Frigate into Christchurch harbour, and while many sheep shagging insults being hurled by both sides and many tinnies drunk, Shawn (Leader of the infamous Red Lanolin Liberation Army) takes over both parliaments by calling for all working sheep to deny pleasures of the flesh to the population of both countries.
Both governments collapse immediately, and a new woolen red flag flies over the South Pacific (as a form of fallout Wales Annexes in sympathy resulting in Unilateral nuclear strikes on Aus NZ and CYM by the royal navy)

True but as long as Taiwan don't officially declare independance then everyone will be happy.
The Chinese can portray it as a Chinese victory, with Taiwan too timid to declare independance.
The US can portray it as a US victory, with China too intimidated by US power to invade Taiwan.
As long as the situation remains in stalemate both sides are happy to sit on the sidelines stroking their egos.

On the "WWIII" things, those American's are a very small minority. Its the Cold War. We fought it with the Ruskies, not indirectly of course, but in little chess matches spanning from Vietnam, Afghanistan, and begining sometime in the middle of WWII when we hopped on board. We knew what we were doing, and what would happen without the Third Reich. Some generals wanted to plunge into the USSR and retrieve the countries they swallowed up, but matters were turned to domestic policies and rebuilding. Also, the Cold War, as an American, is war not just "defensive," we went on the offensive against Communism as a whole. Trying to contain it. I think this is an instituational difference between our countries however.
And, as usual, you speak economic truth! No global trade means countires would have to look within thier own borders. But, with countries' easily exploited natural resource reserves, for the most part, long depleted in the more developed countries, the prospect of "WWIII" as we know it is very slim indeed. Essentially, it would require a complete destruction of the world's communication system, satilites, everything, and the world would be plunged into a modern Dark Age. Sounds pretty sci-fi though.
