Wikipedia fundraising drive ...

6 pints and a curry
09-01-2006, 00:56
So wikipedia raised about $350,000. Did anyone here contribute? And, because I'm really nosy, I'd like to invite you to comment on your reasons in giving money.

Cheers

6 Pints ;)

Such a waste of money that could have fed so many starving children...

I didn't, because I'm really broke and need all my money for stuff.

Surely with the traffic he must be getting he could get all the money he needs just by putting even one advert on the main page?

Ignoring the fact that the people who started Wikipedia are not paid employees, are we?

Ignoring the fact that they're not exactly in need of charity, too.

Which is a very different thing from being a con.

Speaking of which, how much does your internet connection cost?

I'll give money when i can spare some, because i believe in what theyre doing.

Althogh $350'000 isn't very much money at all, that's the cost of one full page advert in the new york times.

I wasn't accusing them of being cons. That was a joke. I just think all that money could have gone to a worthier cause. Also why I didn't donate to wikipedia, but instead to the Save the Children foundation.

For 8 mbits, I pay 240kr/€25/$30 per month.

It probably could have. Still, now it went to a worthier cause than wikipedia, at least.

They provide me with a valuable service. Imagine if that could be said for Wikipedia?

'Valuable' is not an inherent absolute: instead it is relative.

I hadn't gotten that obviousness. Thank you for stating it.

thats the general sort of price in the uk, and you usually get b/w limits unless you pay extra. the UK ISPs suck. 20-ish quid is the general sort of price for 2mb at the moment, though 8 is just starting to come in widespread. so once again, our ISPs suck.
that said we're always ripped off in this country... stupidly high cost of living and all that crap...

Heh, and we're starting to get 100 mbit/s... but that strikes me quite over the top. I used to have 24 mbit/s for €30, but I never used all that to justify the expense, so I downgraded to what I have now. 100 mbit/s is impressive, but I don't know what I'd use it for. TV over IP and stuff like that, I guess, but I'm not interested in things like that.

I know. Everytime I go to the UK, I marvel at the prices. Comparable to Swedish kronas, last time I was there I went into a Burger King to see that a meal that would have cost around 60 kr here, cost 100 kr there. Everything was like that. It has always been like that. Although, shopping in London can be quite a bargain if you're lucky.

100mbps!? thats sick dude... and no fair!! ;) :(
as i say we're only just getting 8 (standardly) or 24 mbps coming in now and even then experts are saying the system won't be able to cope if demand picks up and even then our technology is so outdated hardly anybody will be able to reach those speeds anyway.
bah! :headbang:

tell me about it... i go to the continent and everything's so cheap! for the same stuff!

another reason why britain should join the euro... stop those bloody greedy companies sqeezing unnecessarily large profits out of the british people and 'treasure island'

the worst are cars - quite expensive in their own right - which tend to be 40% to 60% more expensive here than on the continent. and then there's our ridiculously high property prices... hmm this is almost deserving of its own thread... *ponders*

and getting back on topic: wikipedia rules! i want a wikipedia t-shirt

I didn't give money because I can't. I don't earn enough in a year for banks to justify giving me a credit card. But if I had one, I would have given.

Wiki is in the top forty most visited sites on the Internet. You need serious server power to keep that up. Couple that with the fact that there are no ads on wiki means they are indeed in need of charity.

I donated to a worthier cause as well. I bought a FSM T-shirt.
