Sweet Mama Jama, Me Wantee!!!

I was trying to find some numbers on Alfa Romeo GTVs, for no particular reason, and made a miss-step. I looked at a modern car magazine website, albiet a magazine I like. Anyway, I found this:

http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/image/2006/Q1/142006213518.jpg

One highly unusual show debut that falls into the concept-car-very-likely-to-see production category is the three-wheeled Volkswagen GX3. Powered by a 125-bhp engine from the Lupo GTI sold in VW’s home market, this unusual runabout would most likely debut in California due to the state’s fair climate ― and qualify for single-occupant usage of the high-occupancy vehicle car pool lane. Other selling points include solid performance (weighing in at a lithe 1257 lb. allows for an estimated 0-60-mph time of about 5.7 seconds; nearly zero body roll) and thriftiness (estimated city fuel economy of 46 mpg with an approximate starting price of only $17,000).

Now, I should state that I have a massive weakness for reverse trikes. Don't know why, just dig 'em. And Volkswagens. And effecient cars. And performance. Usually these desires are at odds. Until this thing!!!

No, I'll grant-best laid plans and all. Despite the articles brief enthusaism I doubt that the car will actually debut in my state, or at all. And even if it does I'm not in the market for a car that's 'only' $17,000. But still...I live on a great stretch of road near an enviromentally aware town full of people who are more than willing to make gestures, so if they did come out a few people would be driving them by my house.

Kick ass.

Cool, yeah?

Oh, and be sure and point and laugh at people who try and 'rain on my parade' by re-stating that the car isn't likely to actually come out.

It kinda does. For some reason that doesn't bother me. Though I just noticed it doesn't have a windshield, pretty good indicator that they're not that serious about a production version.

It doesn't quite look as cool as the T-Rex (http://www.symbolicmotors.com/images/inventory/4176/images/01.jpg) in the looks department. I don't know why that thing costs so much, though. It's a cockpit straped to a motorcycle.

Yeah, not exactly a family wagen, is it? For me that's a plus. Actually some of the impracticality is what I like, becuase it makes it a bit exclusive. I drive vintage cars, so I'm willing to put up with a lot of crap already.

No, I was making a play on words on coming out + a reference to a show tune, which are through a comical stereotype associated with homosexual males + the car being quite gay in the sense of being colourful (and also likely to appeal to feminine gay men). Aye, 'tis many a layer to what used be a joke I once tried to make, but which was so lost on you, I had to dissect the funny out of.

Being gay myself, it would be quite silly to imply that gayness is something bad, would it not? If you take the reference to gayness as bad, then the badness lies with you.

There is something gay about rain on parades? Or show tunes?

Am I to feel bad that the car would also appeal to gay men?

I agree, it would be silly to imply gayness as a bad thing or try to shame someone with the potential gayness of a phrase or car. Why would you do that?

Come now, you do not live in a vaccume devoid of any cultural reference or stereotype? Or are you just acting like a pedant with a wish to come across as incapable of taking something for what it is?

I for one, see through this and challenge your immediate conclusion that my allusion to gayness imparted negativity. Ask yourself why you project that.

Am I to feel bad that the car would also appeal to gay men?

Again, the question you need to ask yourself is: "Why do I assume a reference to gayness must be negative?"

Fass is a self important troll. Most of the time it's largely ignorable in that "Oh, isn't that cute, the gay guy is trying to weird out the straights..." kinda thing. Not a big deal. I work in theater and see it a lot.

But it gets tiring. Usually I just ignore him, because the worst thing you can do for an attention whore is give him attention, but this was kind of a lobbed ball. And since the subject wasn't really that important by any stretch I went for it. Honestly, without the pissing contest the thread would have fallen off the page already.

But yeah, digging down with Fass does tend to make you look as ridiculous. I just felt like passing the time by pissing him off.

Come now. As I said, either flame me properly, or desist with feeble attempts, especially at the infantile level of doing so to me in the third person. Your literal indirectness is impotence itself. You have a problem with me and you want to call me names? I'm right here. Although I would prefer you didn't, not only because I have no wish for moderation intervention, but because it really, really is a puerile thing to do.

Then there was this-

Only 'well worded' flames are okay? Whatever, dude. If you're going to be a troll grow some thicker skin.

That really was the reason I was so meticulous in explaining what I meant. What I've seen of you earlier did make me doubt your ability to understand. It took a while for my doubts to be assuaged. You indirectly asked for why I let myself be strung along. You got the truth - because I have in fact come to have so little faith in you. Regard that as a flame or whatever you want, but it still doesn't negate the fact that you tried to flame me even before I shared with you the reason for my having patience with you - the patience you so attempted to ridicule by trying to deem it a sort of blindness to your motives, which I guess it was, but for a completely different reason than that for which you had bargained, I'm afraid.

I think the new bus was a karma blow for me. I liked the new Beetle and the new Mini (even though I love the originals) but when I saw the new Bus' I just didn't like 'em. I think because one of the features that I really like about the Bus astheticly is really kinda dangerous, and that's the flat front. I don't think that they can do that safely, so it looked like a Eurovan with a big V on it. Though I did see a picture that made it look alright, I think the tires fit in better or something. I don't know why they backed out of that. Maybe it was whatzhisname stepping down, Dr. Ferry Porsche's nephew...Piech (hehe, didn't realise that). He was also a big fan of the efficient engines.

You know me too well to think I get mad. This is the Internet. Contrary to popular belief, this is not "serious fucking business."

Ah, but take it is exactly what I can. You should know that, too.

I'm not grumpy. Really. Not even now. It's way too early in the morning here to be emotional towards any end of the axis.

I drive a lot of rented minivans in my job (which gets some looks sometimes...). It's hard to get used to those crazy long dashboards. Though I won't admit this that often, I can understand why certain people would drive them, especially now that they have the sliding doors on both sides and those folding seat deals.

I had some friends who kept saying I should try and get my bus on 'Pimp My Ride.' After seeing what they did to the bus that they did pimp (while I would like a sign that would tell people behind me to 'Chill' I don't want it to cover one of the only ways for the engine to cool itself) I don't think it would have been a good idea. Though that 42" plasma tv would be in the van as long as it took to drive home.

Actually, put some spinners and air jacks on your mini-van, slam it to the ground when you pick up the kids. That would rock.

Yeah, here in California it probably wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

I grew up with one of those conversion vans. We had a protable TV in it for a short period of time, until my dad appropriated it for garage use. They are very comfy, but I never had to fill the tank or parralell park in that sucker. (I maintain that I am a parralell parking ninja because I can do it on the first try in my bus)

Man that sounds like it would be a blast to drive. But it would be one of those cars that would go faster if you emptied your pockets. My tiny (but full grown, the dude is just skinny as hell) would be faster by default (and, well, he's a better driver-holding karting championships and all...)

That's a nifty little rod. I wish that there was more things like this. I kind of dream of a Talbot like company, that has a chassis and engine combos that they sell and then there are coach houses that make custom built cars off of that, like the Talbot Lagos and such. I like the old art deco cars (like that Atlantic I posted earlier).

I have to wonder--is the belief that there's nothing new to design or film taking over the world? All these remakes--it's starting to bug me in a way. I know there's still a lot of focus on new technology and stuff, but here in the US, we seem to be locked into the nostalgic looking back for a better time that never was, and it's disconcerting in a way.

I blame Baby Boomers, and not in that "Member of Gen-X Blames Everything on Baby Boomers" kinda way. Maybe...

But, we where raised on a steady diet of nostalgia. The generation that raised us was obsessed with a glorified past so few of them participated in. I regard movies like Forrest Gump to be nostalgic fetish films. Perhaps it was a reaction to 'good ol' days' sentiments of 'The greatest generation' that raised them, but by the time it came to us nostalgia had been turned into a full blown fetish, a past time. Hell, we now have a show that is nostalgic about last week.

I think that that is the cause of a lot of this. With cars, though, I really think it's helped. Cars of the 80s and 90s had become aneceptic and we needed to go back to a time when people actually had a passion for cars to make them interesting again. The danger, and it could be successfully argued, is in over-mining that well. I'd like to see less out-right mimics like the Challenger, Mini and Beetle (despite liking all of them to a degree) and more 'hybrid' modern designs that harken to the past like the Cruiser, Boxster, or Z3/4. It's kinda like we move forward by pretending the blandness of 78-99 never happened.

It's funny you mention that period, because there was a good article in the latest Playboy about Detroit's problems, especially GM (yeah, I read the articles--I get my porn online) in overcoming this perception that they're making crap cars. One of the things the author noted was that the reason that the only US company kicking ass right now was Chrysler was because they were taking stylistic chances. He pointed to the Prowler, the PT Cruiser and the new 300 as examples of that--they're distinctive, and whether you love or hate them, you're not indifferent to them. GM and Ford could learn from that.

I'd have to agree wholeheartedly. And Chrysler has never even been close to my favorite (though I did like the 'Cuda, but that's becasue my dad had one when I was 4). I remember actually dropping my jaw a bit when I first saw the new 300 with the big grill and wheel arches. I think the Crossfire is a great looking car that harkens to a style I've always liked. Audi was going to do something similar but they chickened out.

I never liked the Prowler, especially in light of the Panoz AIV-
http://www.damox.com/cars/thumbs/Panoz/1999_Panoz_AIV_Roadster.jpg
with it's Roush V8 vs the Prowler's V6.

Chrysler really is pulling ahead of the game, and it's worth noting that it is the German company of the big three. Ford has had some opportunities, they had a concept based on thier 1950 custom, but the one that made the road was devoid of personality, like just about all of thier cars. The GT is almost akin to a replica. The new Mustang I'm a little hesitant on because they have never aged well with me despite starting off good.

Before the merger with Benz they had a great opportunity to save one of their brands, Plymouth. The Cruiser was supposed to be part of it. There was a few other in the PT line, including a Spyder-all had good looking designs and all where around $20,000 or less. Given the success of the Cruiser I think it would have saved the brand. It would also be a great place for Chrysler to start releasing hybrid and high efficiency economy cars that have style. It's really too bad that they didn't follow through.

I think that the Cadilacs are starting to look good, at the very least distinctive-there is no mistaking that you are seeing a Cadilac when it drives by, and that low slung two-door (don't know which one that is) looks pretty cool. One passed me the other day and caught my eye.

The big-mouth grill is going to be the signature of cars of the first ten years of the 21st century.

Not to bump an old and embattled thread, but I just came across this thanks to the 'lastest headlines' button on Firefox-
Chrysler sales increase (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4592908.stm)
Chrysler was even doing better than its bunkmate-
Chrysler sales in 2005 rose by 4.7% worldwide to 2.8 million vehicles, while Mercedes-Benz numbers were up 1.7% to 1.22 million cars; with DaimlerChrysler saying both units were aided by well-received new models.
And, to be smug-
Chrysler's US-only sales figures were up 5%, showing that the company is managing to buck the falling sales being endured by its "big three" rivals Ford and General Motors.

Both Ford and General Motors are said to have put an over-reliance upon heavy drinking four-wheel-drive or sports utility vehicles, sales of which have fallen in the US in response to rises in petrol prices.
Less big ugly trucks in the future and more innovative and interesting designs? One can only hope, but Cadillac just introduced an even bigger Escalade....ugh...
