Care to speculate what she is doing at this moment?

I'd like to think she is lounging on a secluded beach, listening to the surf and gulls with a tropical drink.

Part of me thinks its more likely she's bickering over politics with a down- trodden peasant.

Maybe shes tanning on a nudist beach.

Long story short that is what Sinuhue is doing at the moment

Just to set things straight (because it pains me to see such propaganda), there is no restriction in Cuba on approaching locals. I should know; I've been there. I didn't stay in a hotel, I stayed at the homes of random Cuban citizens (B&B style). I wandered freely round the cities and towns.

And no, the food isn't bad at all. Including the food you get in shops for Cubans (rather than for tourists). And the fresh fruit juice in that little corner shop, a glass for 1 Cuban peso (i.e., about $0.04)... Mmmm... Best I've ever tasted.


[Edit:] Oh, and to answer the question, she's probably lying by an outdoor pool somewhere, water glistening on... erm... anyway, wearing a skimpy swimsuit. :p

We are backpacking it and avoiding the resorts altogether...and yes, we intend to consume many Cuban delicacies. Read into that all the innuendoes you feel are appropriate. Because they are. When I was there I got me some Cohibas Esplendidos. If I had thought more about it, I could have taken the box of 25 (70$) and sold them individually for 100$ after sneaking over the border to Maine.

*sigh* We really wanted to be pathetic tourists, and laze about at the resort...but we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it...oh, I've spent months trying to rationalise it, trying to convince myself that it'd be the only way to truly relax...but I just can't be another resort bum. But you know what finally decided me? The reviews of resort food. I'd rather backpack, sleep in concrete cabins, be eaten alive by mosquitos, stung by jellyfish, ripped off by jineteros and accosted by sexy mulatas/os (ok, that last one won't really be a hardship:)) and EAT WELL...than be fed on bland buffet fare. And be surrounded by pasty white Westerners all day.

Well, Cuban food is hardly haute cuisine... I don't know what they serve in resorts; I can only comment on what you get when you stay with Cuban families. I have simple tastes, so the food suited me just fine. (Except one family who were baffled about what to feed a vegetarian, and kept giving me fried eggs, with every meal... Until the overdose of fried eggs made me throw up, literally).

On the whole, the food was fine, if a little repetitive. And the families keep you well fed. Mostly they feed you morning and evening, and you're on your own for lunch, but you can always make do. They feed you well in terms of quantity at the very least, I can promise you that. The more they put on your plate, the more they can charge you, and most will naturally be trying to get as much money out of you as they can. ;)

Which I tend to despise. I like my meals to have substance. Beans, rice, seafood...over delicate little sprays of leafy parsley and sprinkles of sauce meant to hide the fact that your plate is occupied by a tiny slice of smoked salmon...

Which is why I said I by far prefer simple food to 'fancy' food. I tend to prefer British food to French, despite living in France, which my French friends just can't understand.

You should do fine in Cuba, then. Cuban food definitely has "substance".
