I am feeling geeky so I figure I would bring up a general computer discussion thread.
For whatever you like Mac VS PC (yes yes I know but could not think of a better way to say it)
Or hardware
To start the thread off I figured I would show off my brand new backup server at work

I like PC but if you have MAC skills its like you can re-animate the dead when someone needs one fixed and you know how.

I'm thinking of buying a new PC. The upgrade needs to be cheap, but also decent enough to half-run any spiffy new games I might desire. What do you recommend?

Price range? and upgrading from existing hardware or new?
To my opinion, Macs are very good in image editing and video editing and modeling. PCs are generally better overall for gaming and coding, etc.

Depends on what you are looking for. AMD based machines are generally a better bargain especially if you're looking at mid ranged machines. As long as you have a good video card it can make up for mediocre machines for most games. I'm guessing you are looking at buying a machine pre made rather than building one.

Between five and six hundred euro. I'll be buying a new one, but canablizing my old one, so I have no need of CD and floppy drives, hard disks, modems and possible graphics cards (a NVIDA 5500 should still run new-ish games for at least another year, right?)

Correct. My level of skill is not yet good enough for me to be installing processors or motherboards myself.

Depends a lot of motherboards (good ones) tend to be almost exclusivly PCI-E now so AGP cards are out (you can find both but I have not yet used one that worked well)
compleatly from scratch I just priced GoodThoughts out a computer for about 800 USD all said and done ... his was a bit more then yours then yours

That is more or less 660 euros with the exchange rate. Do you still have a copy of Good Thoughts specs close at hand?

My friend from school just got a Sapphire x700 Pro for computer. He is quite happy with the purchase. Also what the hell do people need a 250GB HDD for? Hell I haven't come close to filling my 40 GB HDD. Also I would move up to a AMD 64 3700+ you get double the L2 cache for an extra $20 ($14 Euros).
EDIT: What is SATA2? What makes it different from SATA?

HELL NO BOY THAT 5500 SUCKS!! i just upgraded my 256mb 5500 to a 128mb pny 6600gt, the increase is so immense, went from low on stuff like bf2 to full settings!! :D

Downloads. Anime, entire series of TV shows, games, anything you can put on a computer, and plenty of it.
I have a 40 gig hard drive, and I've had to delete and re-fill the last 12 gigs or so at least 5 times in the last two months to watch everything I want to. (If that's your MO, ALWAYS run ScanDisk after you delete the data, or you'll run into errors constantly!)
Nyeh, I <3 my Dell Inspiron 2200. She's short, sweet, and gets done all I need to get done. Doesn't run what few games I play with any lag, even without any upgrades, so yeah.

I have 40 gigs in anime alone

I'd have close to the size of my old hard drive (60 gig) if I kept everything I watched, but alas, the space does not exist on my poor little laptop, and the desktop isn't down yet (We just moved, couldn't take everything with us at once) to store stuff on, so recycling my disk space is the only way to go.

Burning the series onto DVDs is a good idea too if the anime is hard to find. Alas I lack a burner so I keep it all.

All I have is a CD-RW burner, so burning to DVD is a no, even just data-burning it. I have a 12-sleeve CD holder with 4 CDs in each sleeve full of anime I downloaded and really didn't want to have to download again, so I burned it, but I'm down to my last CD-R, and I've already deleted the stuff I've watched but don't want to have to download again any time soon. xD
