He spoke confidently about the NDP campaign so far, saying it has gone better than the effort in 2004, which resulted in 19 seats. He conceded that the Tories have run a solid effort so far as well.

But while he acknowledged that the Liberals have had their troubles, he warned against writing off the ruling party and its leader, Paul Martin.

"The Liberals are the ultimate campaigners ... we haven't seen anything yet," Layton said. "We're still a long way from where this could wind up."

I really had some respect for Jack a few weeks back. He actually showed a bit of strong leadership.

Yet, now he is telling Canadians to vote for Liberals (whereis not too long ago he thought strategic voting was dumb) to make sure that the conservatives don't get into power. A leader of a party, even a weak one, wouldn't say "vote for the other guy"

Jack is unofficially working for Paul Martin.

i didnt know respect for jack layton is possible...actually i once might have had a shred, before ive studied economics, history etc etc, seriously and outside of a 'formal eduction' (eg:none of this highschool/university indoctrination, they tried but i fought them off).
he lost the last shred i might have had for him at a speech here in london ontario a couple years back, when he was simply misinformed on the topic he was giving a speech on...missile defense.
the basis of his argument was that it was a waste of money and effort for canada because and never worked and couldnt work. this simply is not true as the soviets first successful shot down missiles in 1967, and the USA has been doing so since around the same time. anyways i confronted him on the issue and he said that i needed to do some research, i found some solid resources, sent him the materials...no response of ocurse, what can i expect...
on the other hand i havnt heard such slock about missile defense since...so maybe it worked never know

(ps: im not for or against missile defense, i dont really care as there are bigger issues, but i am against being misinformed!)

Wow, it seems that this person didn't read the article in its fullest, despite linking to it.

All Layton is saying is that people shouldn't be scared off voting for Liberal (likely referring to people who previously voted Liberal but are now discontent), because the Conservatives are worse.

Oh and this was right where [NS]Canada cut off their quote...

He (Layton) also expressed optimism about the NDP's chances and said the party's spring budget deal has given voters confidence to support them.

As well, he's heartened by polls that show many voters favour the NDP as their second choice and says he could benefit if the Liberals or Conservatives trip up in the final weeks.

Jack Layton NDP: Don't vote for me!
Haha! If he really said that, I might consider voting for him.

Well, I don't think he's promoting Paul Martin. He's just warning that even though the Liberals are having trouble - they're probably packing a lot more - so the NDP and Conservatives have to be careful not to let their campaigning guard down.

Yeah, well, fuck the Conservatives. I personally prefer the NDP to all other parties but if the Liberals are the closest ones to keep the Conservatives from winning, then that's what must be done.

I agree. I would normally vote Liberal without thinking twice about but I must confess that I am happy at how their campaign is running but I find the recent insults to be disgracefull. I truly feel that the Liberal Party needs to be taught a lesson, but voting NDP would only be helping Harper.
