The end of WW I and WW II

assination of hitler

Psst, I hate to spoil this for you, but it's "assassination", and Hitler wasn't assassinated. He committed suicide.

Best moments... Hmmm... I'll have to think about that, though the Russian and Cuban Revolutions come to mind. I'm not saying they lived up to their promise, but at the time they were borne by a huge wave of hope.

The day Gorbachev decided to let it go.
All the times we almost went to nuclear war, but sense prevailed were pretty neat too.
The economic miracle in Germany and Japan after the war was a good time for those involved.

The end of both world wars.
The end of arparthide.
The fall of the talabin.
The fall of the USSR.
The end of the British Empire.
Computers,the internet.
Gandhi, Mandela, Mother Threasa.
The exploration of Space.
Penicillium, Asprin.
Airtravel.
For me the coolest memory was the people of the former eastern bloc countries peacefully taking control of their own future.Waching them tear down the Berlin wall with their bear hands still moves me to tears.
Following that, watching Mandela walk to freedom.Martin Luther Kings, 'I have a dream speach'(on film, not that old).

Sadly true. Most of the new bands that I like are quite obscure. There hasn't been much from the past 5 years that has been very groundbreaking. There have been a handful of really good albums and innovative bands, but most of it is pretty average. I think rock is oversaturated...it could only ever go so far.

Hahaha... :p

There will always be craptacular music. My main problem, though, is bands like the Datsuns, etc. (New Zealand band...I'm not sure how popular they are over there) that make music that is good...but only really rehashes of older stuff like AC/DC. It's sad, because there's nothing really wrong with them - I want to like them, but I can't hold my interest because it has been done so many times before. And that's the problem with a lot of modern music. I've tried songwriting - it's really hard to come up with something that sounds original.

I don't know them but there will always be clones of past bands. On ac/dc I think the funniest cover band has to be Hayseed/dc.Snow Patrol are kind of emerging as an ok-ish group. But you really got to go so far underground for anything new every time I try I nearly hit china.Gonna have to settle for the pub secene here we have some good new talent comming through the ranks here. This decade seems to be missing some raw new sound to break through.Maybe it will be like the '70 where by the end they were so tired of shite the got Punk.Don't know if I can hold out till '07/08 though.

Hmmm, i've heard of Snow Patrol. I'll check them out. The last modern band that really made me go "wow" was Queens of the Stone Age, but that was a few years ago...and they're almost 10 years old now.

Judging by your music taste, you might want to get into post-rock. I doubt any of it'll make you go 'wow', but for the most part it's original. Admittedly, once you've heard one album by a particular band you've pretty much heard them all, but they're still good.

I don't know how much $50 actually is, but I'll assume it's a lot for a cd. Over here they're around 40-50% more expensive than other cds, so around £14 (and only £12.50 for students :D). Worth it, in my opinion.

Yeah, it is. I usually get them for $10 occasionally, $15-$20 usually, and rarely will a brilliant album entice me to spend $30 on it. But $50 is too much, especially when i'm not positive i'll like it.

And WTF - students get CD discounts there?

I suppose i'll look on ebay and the like. I'm listening to "dead flag blues" right now...it's different, but good...i've listened to some drone stuff before and liked it, but this is a bit more musical, in a good way.

We have the NUS (National Union of Students) card, which gives us discounts at various stores, like HMV. To the best of my knowledge it's the only major music store that gives student discounts. But they don't sell secondhand, and that's how I get most of my (bought) music, so I only use it if I can't find what I want somewhere else.
