My Resume

Hi, I am a long-time lurker here and I need help, a LOT OF HELP on my resume. I am only 18, and have only two real job experiences. I have two unofficial job experiences, and quite a bit of volunteer work. I have been suggested for an internship at "Merrill Lynch". I am currently a freshman in College and I am heading for a BBA. So ultimately I need to know the does and don't-s for it. It sucks because it is night time so majority of the [smart] posters are sleeping. But I'll take whatever I can get, you can ask me for about as much information as you need to help you help me.

Find a guide how you should do it (I'm pretty sure there are lots of them if you just google) and then do the exact opposite because everyone else is using the guide. They'll remember yours cos it's different.

I think you just called the Europeans stupid.

There are a lot of templates you can use in word processor programs. Your school, too, should have someone who can help you with it.

I'm too insecure about my resume to help out, since I don't think I get called enough, though I don't know if it's lack of experience, me living too far away, or craptacular resume.

So are you keeping a job in AK? A fellow AKan wants to know.

Most definitely I am keeping a job in AK! :) I love it here. Sarkhaan, thank you very much that is actualy quite helpful. And CTOAN, I apologize if I offended you or anyone else. So I think the way I'll do it is two pages. First being the basics of who I am and what I have attained - GED, National Honors, High Honor Roll, volunteer, jobs. And then the next page will be what I am good at - organizing, planning, efficiency..

It just sucks, my past English teacher tried to show us how to champion resumes and (we both) failed miserably at it. Well I need to keep working I'll check in regular if any gold nuggets are dropped to me...who knows...miracles do happen.

I wan't offended, I'm in California. I just wanted to get in there before a European did and got really upset. I suck at resumes, so I can't take any real offense at being told I couldn't help.

If you need help with your resume I would imagine you wouldn't know the difference between a good one and a bad one and as a consequence would not know the difference between a 'smart' poster and a dumb one.
Fear not though, for today is your lucky day.
If you did your geography at school you might remember there are other countries in the world other than the one you reside in. I am from one such country and I am .......awake. Not only that, but I am also 'smart'. Yep, foreign, smart and awake.
Now for the helpful bit. I have the edge on you regarding age and do contract work which means I get to have lots of interviews. To date I have had about 25 interviews and received an offer of employment from all. Each interview is different but apart from relevant experience most interviewers look for the same thing as detailed in the following links.

The golden rule is to know the requirement and deliver. Know your 'customer'. It would be no good going for an engineering job and talking technical stuff with HR. Likewise, an engineering manager wants to know that you can do the job. Tailor your patter to the individual, but don't lie.

Good luck.

The most important thing. You can't send the same resume to everyone. If you get an interview, remember to prepare for it too. Know the company, think about what you want to do, how much you want to earn, what are your plans for the future (career wise) etc.

This a (very) rough draft of my unfortunate and sad resume, I just wish I had more experiences and more experience writing one. Anyhow comment as you wish I need sleep. I edited out some minor stuff just because...really I don't want some troll who just happens to look at this post to call me in the middle of the night.

Hey, he posted that at 8am GMT, 9am CET... *anyone* with an ounce of common sense is still in bed then!

Anyway, as for the CV: Don't make it too wordy, it should be about two pages. Get all the facts in there you need, and emphasise all the good points as much as possible, but *do*not*lie*. Plain white paper, obviously, with black, easily readable fonts (no Comic Sans or Gothic nonsense).
Try and tailor it to your victim as much as possible, depending on what they write in the ad (obviously tricksier if you're emailing it to an agency to look for you, but they're all crap anyway, so nevermind).

Considering how much time the JobCentre spent trying to teach me to write CVs, I should remember more than that...

Oh, want to know the easiest way to get a job? Nepotism.

You left the voluntary work out. I think it's more important than Papa Murphy's. It shows you don't mind helping other people for free. It also shows you have an understanding of other peoples needs. Get it in.

I'm a great resume writer. Write one for myself and well, took me ages to get a job. Write one for my sister and she scores a job really quick.
